Kim at Elastic Waist wrote a great post the other day about her August resolutions.
I agree with her wholeheartedly – why should we save the resolutions for January when no one keeps them anyway?
In my comment to Kim’s post, I made some goals for the month that I don’t intend to keep.
It’s not that I don’t WANT to spend more time enjoying the outdoors, or experiment with new recipes, but what I’d really like to do in the month of August is give myself a break.
I want to eat a restaurant meal without calculating the calories in my head and I want to lose track of time at work because I’m so busy reading blogs (for work purposes, people!) and miss the 6:30 spin class that I usually have to knock down old ladies en route to the train in order to be on time for (and you know that one’s true if you’ve read any of my prior posts about how dearly I love my city and its slow moving pedestrians). I want to go ahead and have another glass of wine and not think about whether or not I’ll feel it at my 10AM meeting the next day – that’s why they invented ibuprofen.
OK, maybe that’s not why, but I’m sure it’s up there.
If my first draft isn’t perfect, I can write another. If my pitches don’t hit every key message, I’ll revise it to make it better. If my mom doesn’t like my outfit, she doesn’t have to and hopefully she won’t tell me to my face, since that would just be mean and if I like it, that’s really all that’s important (even if it is bad. I’ll probably look back on pictures of myself in 15 years anyway and say WHAT WAS I THINKING) and getting dressed in the morning will be so much quicker without the second guessing.
So in August, I resolve to cut myself a break.
I guess you could say I want to not sweat the small stuff, but there’s too much small stuff out there, so I’m going to start by trying not to sweat it ALL and we’ll see where that lands me in September.
