Kylie Igge of Recovered Interior

Kylie Egge

Kylie Egge doesn’t run your typical upholstery shop. As the owner of Recovered Interior, she has an eye for imagining overlooked vintage and antique furniture as eye-catching statement pieces.

Since discovering furniture re-design five years ago, her craft is one part “search and rescue” and one part reimagination. Think carved side chairs with punchy peacock patterned fabric or a vintage porter’s chair recovered in hunter green velvet and a matching glossy green frame for a monochromatic effect.

While aspiring do-it-yourselfers flock to Recovered Interior for intimate four-student upholstery classes, Egge has also joined forces with Cami Schneck to create furniture from scratch. In their Recovered Interior Collection, each piece is hand made and produced in Chicago, a rarity in an era where furniture is increasingly mass-produced and its manufacturing outsourced. The result is a stunning collection made from unexpected materials for high impact.

Kylie gave us the inside story on what makes the collection special, what piece is her absolute favorite and what we can expect from Recovered Interior in the future.

KA: Tell me more about your new Recovered Interior Collection? How did it come about?
KE: The collection can be described as “upholstery with a rebellious spirit.” We start with classic, timeless shapes and add unexpected elements that resist convention to create unique pieces with an edge. We are introducing five pieces: the Alloy Chair, Levitating Daybed, Chromatic Bench, Chained Club Chair and our signature piece appropriately named the Rebellion Settee.

KA: Are there any colors, fabrics, or other materials you’re especially excited about these days when it comes to furniture?
KE: I am really interested in color variation in gradients and tone-on-tone color with contrasting textures. I think that this is really evident in the collection. I have designed a large-scale ombre fabric exclusive to this collection that I am really excited about as well.

KA: If you had to pick, which piece in the collection would you say is your favorite?
KE: That’s a tough one! If I had to choose I would say the Chromatic Bench. I think it is a simple, yet interesting piece that is very versatile. I can envision our clients using it at a dining table, at the end of a bed, entryway or even as additional seating in a living room. The felted wool fabrics used in the upholstery have always been a favorite material to work with.

KA: What can we expected from you and Recovered Interior next?
KE: You can definitely expect to see more vintage one-of-a-kind pieces for sale. I have a few in the works that are going to be hard to part with but I can’t wait to get them out there for people to see. We will hopefully see the private label collection expand as well. I have already been sketching a few new pieces.
