Growing up, it was a real treat in my house if one of my parents had gotten up early on a weekend to pick up donuts or bagels for breakfast.
Obviously, this was before I had any cognizance of calories or the fact that donuts would one day land firmly on the no-fun side of the list of Foods You Should Avoid Unless You Want To Buy Larger Jeans.
Which you might.
Once you taste these donuts you’re not going to care about your jeans and you’re not going to want to stop eating them.
Dipped in butter and cinnamon sugar these are the kind of donuts you make when you want to impress someone. When you want to say thank you. Or when you just happen to be craving something sweet.
Even though these are made in a pan specifically intended for donuts (round shape, hole in center) I know that isn’t something everyone has in their pantry. If you don’t want to shell out $11.99 for a new pan, use a muffin/cupcake tin instead.
Your donuts won’t have the traditional shape but they’ll still taste every bit as delicious.
The ingredients for these are ones that you probably already have in your pantry if you’ve ever baked the anyone-can-do-it Tollhouse Cookie recipe on the back of the package of Nestle’s chocolate chips.
Don’t even worry about the cookies though. Just make these instead.
- 1 cup flour
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 egg
- ½ cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 4 tbsp canola oil
- 1 stick melted butter
- 1½ cup of sugar and 1 Tablespoon cinnamon combined in a bowl
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Stir dry ingredients together. Add egg, vanilla, and milk and whisk together for one minute. Add oil and continue to whisk until well combined.
- Grease doughnut pan wells. Fill each ⅔ way with batter. Bake for 7-9 minutes. Allow doughnuts to cool for a minute or two. Then dip doughnuts in melted better and toss in bowl with the cinnamon sugar mixture.

May 23, 2011 at 9:21 pmOh my goodness these look so good. TOO good. It’s actually happening now, in my household. When my husband wakes up early, he goes to donuts run. Kids and I are so excited to eat donuts and I make coffee. Such a happy treat on weekends. π Your homemade ones look much better. But well I don’t really bake normally and it will probably end with disaster so I just enjoy looking at your gorgeous donuts. π

May 22, 2011 at 5:34 amI remember those days when I could eat weekend treats and never even think about it. My uncles owned a bakery in the city and would bring loads of goodies to us each weekend. May 21, 2011 at 1:02 pmIn my house growing up, my dad used to go pick up donuts some weekend mornings for a special treat too. It was made even more exciting when I got to go with him and help pick out the flavors. While I’ve pretty much avoided donuts most of my adult life, these sound awfully good with their cinnamon sugar coating!

May 21, 2011 at 1:00 pmI have never been a big donut fan, but the cinnamon goodness on these might change my mind! What a treat!!!
