In years past, I’ve been just as excited for fall as every other white girl who likes to wear leggings as pants and sip the annual pumpkin spice latte. Summer is hot and sticky and you sweat just standing outside, and there was a time in my life that I looked forward to sweaters. At some point in the past few years I’ve grown to appreciate, well — maybe cult-like worship is a better term — summer: weekend days by the pool, after-work happy hours on rooftop terrace restaurants, and the sunlight that takes the sting out of the miserable winter and spring we have in the Midwest. The one thing that I am really looking forward to though is using my slow cooker more often. It seems unnatural to be making soup, stew and chili when it’s 90 degrees outside and we have access to a grill, but the idea of “set-it-and-forget-it” meals is growing increasingly attractive the busier I get. As long as we’re on the subject, I want to talk about my slow-cooker for a few minutes. I have the KitchenAid Multi-Cooker, which comes with a 2-in-1 reversible steam basket and roasting rack. It has 10 cooking settings […]

It’s August, so you might think that everyone is already well past summer grilling recipes and on to what they’re going to pack in their kids’ lunch boxes. Yeah, there will be none of that around here. What I do have though is a grill. Brad and I just moved to a new apartment in a brand new construction, full-amenity building. This means there are two four-burner Coyote outdoor grills for residents’ use, each with over 875 square inches of cooking space — that is a lot of chicken. As it works out, we happen to love grilled chicken and I’ve been learning my way around the grill, too. Despite the fact that I have a significant fear of food poisoning us and I have a tendency to overcook poultry, I’ve managed a few success stories. One recent success story is this grilled taco lime chicken with fresh mango salsa. Whether or not I made said fresh mango salsa from scratch…well, that is not what we’re here to talk about tough. We’re here to talk about the taco spice rub that I whipped up because having just moved, spices were literally the only thing in my cabinet when I went […]

Garlicky Black Pepper Salmon is served on top of a bed of rice noodles in a homemade Teriyaki sauce for the perfect quick weeknight dinner. When Brad and I moved in together I knew that a lot of things would change after nine years of living alone. No more leaving bras on the kitchen table, no more hitting snooze seven times in the morning and it’s only a matter of time before I’ll need to retire my pink, floral throw pillows. I also knew that cohabitation would be a great excuse to step up my dinner game. Now, I’ve long said that there is no reason someone should subsist on fast food simply because they live alone or are cooking for one, and I firmly believe in that. Even so, there are some real benefits to cooking for more than one person: there’s someone to eat your leftovers, you can try new recipes and get another person’s honest feedback, and also, it’s really nice to have a live in dinner buddy who happens to be your significant other. Neither Brad nor I are necessarily what you’d call picky eaters, but I’m very particular about quality seafood and he prefers shellfish over white […]

Lean and spicy, buffalo chicken burgers made with lean ground chicken, hot wing sauce, blue cheese and red onion is the perfect answer to buffalo wings: without the grease and mess! From the moment I started telling people that Brad and I planned to move in together, I heard some variation of: “wow, what a big step” or “wow, that’s a big change!” It’s been about a month and a half and so far, the biggest change is that the amount of sports and sports media I consume has at least tripled, and the number of Grey’s Anatomy reruns I watch on a weekly basis has quickly plummeted to zero. A lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and a die-hard Buckeye, my boyfriend takes his sports very seriously. As for me, I’ve never been much of a sports fan. When I was around 10 years old, I discovered that if I feigned an interest, my dad would let me stay up later with him to watch the Yankees, so I learned a good deal about baseball during my early adolescent years. As a result, I’m far more active a participant in watching Chicago Cubs games than I am during Ohio State football. Football is synonymous with […]

Red Pepper Chicken Corn Chowder made with a blend of rice, potatoes, non-GMO freeze dried corn, onion, red bell pepper, celery, chives, dill, cayenne pepper, chicken broth, cheddar cheese, cream, chopped or shredded chicken and fresh cilantro. After five years of self-employment, there were a lot of perks that I looked forward to when I decided to find a full-time job. Among them were health insurance, actual human colleagues, and business travel. The idea of traveling to New York, D.C., Seattle, Los Angeles and perhaps even internationally was a huge advantage for my sheltered self. Aside from the benefits of getting to work with people all over the country and meet them in person (and there are many, but that’s a different blog post) I love the side perks of traveling for work. I love to eat in different types of restaurants, sleep in king sized beds that I don’t have to make myself in the morning and yes, I take full advantage of the wake-up call service, which sometimes I wish I could find a way to get at home, too (a chihuahua helps, but sometimes he’s lazier than me). This year, the amount of travel I do has increased and even though my increasing frequent […]
