I’m almost certain that the first meal I ever learned to cook on my own, start to finish, was chicken Parmesan. Or chicken parmigiana if we’re doing that. It’s simple, classic comfort food and the first thing I’ll order at a red and white checkered tablecloth Italian restaurant (seriously, try it at Club Lago. It’s the bee’s’ knees). When Jewel-Osco challenged me to use several of their Signature products to develop a recipe that’s “me” on a plate, I was tempted to take the cheeky route and develop a recipe that included coffee, bread, bagels, pizza, French fries, every kind of cheese and wine and oh! chocolate. Definitely some chocolate. Then I realized that nobody, even I, would want to eat that, and I decided to call back to the first recipe I ever perfected: chicken Parmesan. Now you all know me well enough to know that I like to take everything to the next level, whether it’s adding a special (read: more than $12) bottle of wine to pair with a simple dinner for Brad and I on a Tuesday night or a decorative piñata and fresh fruit purees for margaritas at a Saturday night taco party (I bet […]

These roasted lemon chicken breasts are made with a lemon garlic white wine sauce and spices, the perfect weeknight dinner recipe for all four seasons or any occasion. The transition from Spring to Summer is the time of year when many people dust off their grills, pull out their tongs and abandon the oven for the next six months. For people who live in homes with backyards or apartments with decks or shared outdoor space, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. For people with no access to grilling, it’s a sad, dark time where you turn on your oven, blast your AC and make the best of it. This recipe, adapted from a Barefoot Contessa cookbook, is an anytime of year recipe. It’s a great winter dish, pairing just as well with our pappardelle with white truffle butter cream sauce and a glass of red as it will with a crisp Sancerre and a healthy serving of roasted asparagus with pesto and lemon.

As much as I like eating healthily, I also like a good amount of junk food. For as long as I can remember, I was able to pass up on savory, salty junk food – chips, French fries, chicken fingers – in favor of sweets and desserts. I’m not what the physiological reason is that would command my taste preferences to change, but they certainly have over the years. Now, while I am certainly tempted by soft chocolate chip cookies and pumpkin chocolate chip squares, I am just as likely to pass on dessert in favor of indulging in a salty or savory treat. No, make that a spicy, salty, savory treat. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a person for whom chicken fingers don’t evoke some sort of childhood memory. For me, chicken fingers were a frequent staple at the dinner table and one of the only items my brother and I liked to order off the kids menu at restaurants. Unlike some of my other childhood snack staples (does anyone else remember the microwave popcorn that was dyed a “surprise” neon color that you’d discover when you opened the bag? Ew), chicken fingers are also a big […]

I haven’t been grocery shopping in about two weeks or something. Which means, it’s time for pantry cooking. Life gets busy, or you’re out of town, or you’re sitting on the couch weighing the options between dallying on Facebook or putting on some decent clothing to go to the store. Facebook always wins. A girl’s gotta eat though. And so does a girl’s husband. And both of them are trying to save money. (The key word there is trying). So lately, the routine has been to go stand blankly in front of the fridge or the pantry and try to come up with a super creative dinner using only tortilla chips, spaghetti sauce and brown ‘n’ serve sausages. Gross. Realistically though, we all have certain things that take up permanent residence in the pantry or fridge. And even more realistically, life doesn’t always allow for last-minute grocery runs, if it allows for grocery runs at all. Therein, it seems like a good idea to have some pantry-friendly options for those nights (or weeks) when fresh or gourmet is out of the question and you’re desperately looking for that big red “Easy” button. Of course, I am not advocating a grocery store […]

Three years ago, my first year out of college, I went home a lot on the weekends. I lived in a nice town populated mainly with twenty- and thirty-somethings, yet come Friday, I just needed a break. I wanted to go to movies in my hometown and shop at my old mall. I wanted to buy groceries in the nicer grocery store down the street from my mom’s neighborhood instead of the A&P around the corner from my apartment (I adamantly refused to buy a “granny cart” to lug my packages and anyway, I didn’t think the store was that clean). So, every other week or so, I found myself on a train to my mom’s Philadelphia suburb for a weekend of sleeping without the interruption of my roommates coming home at 4:00 a.m. with their new best friends for a late-night dance party complete with pizzas that would inevitably arrive after they’d fallen asleep. With my entry-level salary, I didn’t always have a ton of money for entertainment but I looked forward to a Sunday ritual with my mom: spending the afternoon and evening watching movies, eating junk food and cooking meals: pot roast, lentil soup, baked ziti. We called […]
