In case you weren’t already aware, Chicago had a winter problem this year. The problem was that winter would not seem to end. The groundhog did his thing in February, and we all dealt with the resulting news like reasonable, responsible citizens. We waited until spring officially arrived on Tuesday, March 20. We waited patiently as the first day of spring passed, bringing with it about two days of reasonable spring weather before the skies turned gray and stayed that way for the next three weeks. Easter came and went and April showers arrived in full force. Finally, we thought, the weather is doing what it’s supposed to do. April showers bring May flowers, right? Well it turns out that this year, April showers brought snow showers and it freaking snowed three times in April. Now that the weather has finally turned a corner, the road to recovery has been rough for the Chicagoans who have been popping Vitamin D and using the happy lamp at work since October. It’s hard to climb out of that funk after what felt like 297 of days straight of weather misery. The best place to go to inspire the spring spirit this year […]

I saw a meme this week that said “January is the Monday of months.” Even though I was born in January, it is hardly my favorite page of the calendar. January is gray, cold and coincides with the letdown that follows the holidays. You’re taking down decorations, discarding the Christmas tree and essentially undoing the festivity and joy of the weeks prior. Couple that with the fact that you’re supposed to bring to a screeching halt the cooking, baking and indulgence of December and replace it with salads and green smoothies and well, I’m not a doctor but I think we just found the cause of “Seasonal Affective Disorder.” Even though actual medical doctors might tell you that exercise and eight hours of sleep each night will help, I think baking is a much better bet. Even though there are chocolate chip cookies in my oven as I type this post, a good old fashioned baking binge doesn’t have to mean carbs and calories. I don’t make granola very much, but when I do I always wonder why I don’t make it more often. It’s incredibly easy, it comes together in minutes, and it’s a great thing to bake in […]

Whenever I’m hosting a brunch, my menu generally looks something like this: a sweet pastry (chocolate chip sconesare one of my favorites); smoked salmon, a dozen bagels and at least three different types of cream cheese from the bagel shop in our neighborhood; a bottle (or three) of champagne and a carafe of orange juice; a seasonal fresh fruit and yogurt parfait bar and of course, a baked egg dish that I can make the night before and bake off in the morning. In the egg category, one of my favorite go-to recipes is this spinach and cheese strata that is rich, savory and perfect. With the holiday season in full-swing, egg casseroles always make me think of the movie, “The Family Stone.” Sarah Jessica Parker’s character meets her boyfriend’s parents for the first time and though everything is going terribly, she insists on making her family strata recipe for brunch, only to drop it all on the floor. I had a nice internal chuckle when Brad told me, shortly after we began dating, that his family always had a breakfast casserole on Christmas Day – I won’t be making the Messerveys a breakfast casserole anytime soon out of sheer […]

It’s August, so you might think that everyone is already well past summer grilling recipes and on to what they’re going to pack in their kids’ lunch boxes. Yeah, there will be none of that around here. What I do have though is a grill. Brad and I just moved to a new apartment in a brand new construction, full-amenity building. This means there are two four-burner Coyote outdoor grills for residents’ use, each with over 875 square inches of cooking space — that is a lot of chicken. As it works out, we happen to love grilled chicken and I’ve been learning my way around the grill, too. Despite the fact that I have a significant fear of food poisoning us and I have a tendency to overcook poultry, I’ve managed a few success stories. One recent success story is this grilled taco lime chicken with fresh mango salsa. Whether or not I made said fresh mango salsa from scratch…well, that is not what we’re here to talk about tough. We’re here to talk about the taco spice rub that I whipped up because having just moved, spices were literally the only thing in my cabinet when I went […]
