You might have heard the silly saying “you can never be too rich or too thin.” Well, I won’t editorialize on that statement because frankly, it would be a waste of everyone’s time. What I will do is modify it to add to the phrase “…or have too many cookies.” Yes, you can eat too many cookies but when it comes to filing recipes away in your repertoire, there is no such thing as too much when it comes to all things chocolate chip. I have two recipes for chocolate chip cookies that I adore: a soft chocolate chip cookie recipe and a chewier, crispier chocolate chip cookie recipe. Though chocolate chip cookies can be endlessly adapted and modified to suit different tastes and moods, I decided my own arsenal needed more variety. You can add a lot of things to basic chocolate chip cookie recipes to make them your own but for me, adding malt powder seemed like second nature. When I was a kid, I had a powerful sweet tooth and no trip to the movies was complete without milk duds, junior mints or chocolate covered malt balls, which remain a favorite to this day.

Orange. Cranberry. Two flavors reminiscent of holiday desserts. All baked into one delicious citrus chocolate chunk cookie. I started off with a recipe for orange cranberry cookies and before long, the cranberries had been benched in favor of chocolate chunks. Typically, I like chocolate pure and unadulterated. I don’t like chocolate/peanut butter, I can live without chocolate/caramel and chocolate/citrus is as good to me as no chocolate at all. I thought the orange and cranberry combination would be a nice change from the chocolate chip cookies that, if I do say so myself, I’m quite good at making. But no sooner had I chopped a cup of dried, sweetened cranberries did it occur to me that they would be better served in scones. Or granola. O anything else that didn’t offer chocolate as an alternative. Within moments, my eyes fell on an orange dark chocolate bar that I’d gotten in a gift set and was waiting to be turned into brownies to bake for a friend’s birthday. Well, I sacrificed the brownies for these cookies and wouldn’t you know, it was well worth the risk: citrus chocolate chunk cookies were born.

Last week, a friend of mine commented about how these days, people are so busy worrying about their next move that they can’t enjoy the small things. So tonight in honor of the gorgeous weather we’ve been having (and because when I was sitting out on my balcony earlier, someone was grilling and it smelled amazing) I took out my tiny, reminiscent George Foreman to make grilled veggies in a yummy London Broil marinade from the Food Network. I skipped the London Broil part (not a big red meat eater) and marinated asparagus, zucchini and yellow summer squash, which I ate with crusty whole wheat Italian bread. It took about seven rounds on the Foreman before all my veggies were cooked, but was well worth it for a good dinner (and tomorrow’s lunch!) Shortly after the good dinner (that I was quite proud of myself for whipping up) when I went down to the laundry room to retrieve a long-forgotten about set of sheets that I’d thrown in this morning, I found the dryer in use by one of my neighbors, but my sheets and two hand towels folded neatly on top of the dryer. Gone are the days of college […]
