In years past, I’ve been just as excited for fall as every other white girl who likes to wear leggings as pants and sip the annual pumpkin spice latte. Summer is hot and sticky and you sweat just standing outside, and there was a time in my life that I looked forward to sweaters. At some point in the past few years I’ve grown to appreciate, well — maybe cult-like worship is a better term — summer: weekend days by the pool, after-work happy hours on rooftop terrace restaurants, and the sunlight that takes the sting out of the miserable winter and spring we have in the Midwest. The one thing that I am really looking forward to though is using my slow cooker more often. It seems unnatural to be making soup, stew and chili when it’s 90 degrees outside and we have access to a grill, but the idea of “set-it-and-forget-it” meals is growing increasingly attractive the busier I get. As long as we’re on the subject, I want to talk about my slow-cooker for a few minutes. I have the KitchenAid Multi-Cooker, which comes with a 2-in-1 reversible steam basket and roasting rack. It has 10 cooking settings […]

Summer is the best. It’s the best for a lot of reasons, but my first second and third reasons are all one word: outside. Being outside makes me happy in ways that being inside does not. I like to be in pools and sitting beside pools in equal measure, and I enjoy farmers’ markets, grilling and dining al fresco. It stays light out later than 4:00 p.m. and I don’t have to arm wrestle Henry into a coat in order to take him outside for .3 seconds to do his business before he bolts back inside. This is not to say that I enjoy nature in all of its forms – for example, I would not like to go camping because allegedly, you have to do your #2 in a hole in the ground. No thank you. Since I have little of relevance to tell you about sitting by a pool or going to the farmers’ market to buy cheese and croissants (because isn’t that why everyone goes to farmer’s markets?) I would like to talk about what we’ve been grilling. Main Dishes The Best Barbecue Ribs Ever These should also be called the easiest barbecue ribs ever because […]

January is a very bittersweet month for me. On one hand, I was born in January, which is a nice excuse for a little bit of festivity and celebration in an otherwise bleak calendar page. On the other hand, the joy of the holiday season is long forgotten, the weather in the Midwest tests our will to live on a daily basis and everyone starts dieting. I’m all for eating your greens, but January resolutions frequently make dinner parties and girls’ wine and cheese nights significantly less fun than they were in December where you could strap on the Christmas cookie feedbag and feel no regrets. If you’re thinking about jumping on the post-Christmas cleanse bandwagon this year, these recipes are healthy, colorful and simple to throw together during the coldest, bleakest days in the middle of what, at times, may seem like a never-ending winter. These recipes are all Whole30 approved — so your diet resolutions are safe with me. Creamy Bacon Garlic Spaghetti Squash Time consuming as it can be to make spaghetti squash, it would be really nice to come home and have this bacon garlic spaghetti squash casserole ready to go in your refrigerator.

I love to go out on New Year’s Eve. Now, I don’t love crowded bars or busy hotel celebrations, but I like to celebrate special occasions, like New Years’ Eve, at friends’ parties and going out to dinner. I love an excuse to get a little dressed up and have a night out. Brad, on the other hand, loves the Ohio State Buckeyes. and they happen to be playing in The Fiesta Bowl on Saturday night. Suffice to say, we’ll be spending New Year’s Eve in and not unsurprisingly, I’ve been spending a lot of time planning our New Year’s Eve menu. Last week, I shared some of my favorite New Year’s Eve recipes on CBS Chicago with Marissa Bailey. If you want to start the new year on a healthy note, preparation is power. Each of these ideas have one thing in common: they are each super easy to prepare and in most cases, make ahead, using fresh Organic ingredients from the O Organics line at Jewel-Osco. O Organics’ mission is to make a wide variety of USDA certified organic foods affordable for all. O Organics features more than 300 items for every occasion throughout the store—from fresh fruits and vegetables, to wholesome […]

Garlicky Black Pepper Salmon is served on top of a bed of rice noodles in a homemade Teriyaki sauce for the perfect quick weeknight dinner. When Brad and I moved in together I knew that a lot of things would change after nine years of living alone. No more leaving bras on the kitchen table, no more hitting snooze seven times in the morning and it’s only a matter of time before I’ll need to retire my pink, floral throw pillows. I also knew that cohabitation would be a great excuse to step up my dinner game. Now, I’ve long said that there is no reason someone should subsist on fast food simply because they live alone or are cooking for one, and I firmly believe in that. Even so, there are some real benefits to cooking for more than one person: there’s someone to eat your leftovers, you can try new recipes and get another person’s honest feedback, and also, it’s really nice to have a live in dinner buddy who happens to be your significant other. Neither Brad nor I are necessarily what you’d call picky eaters, but I’m very particular about quality seafood and he prefers shellfish over white […]
