In one of my favorite episodes of Friends, Monica and Rachel bet that they know Chandler and Joey better than Chandler and Joey know them, with Chandler’s pet duck as the wager. Ross writes the questions and delivers them game-show style, and it’s soon revealed that while Rachel claims her favorite movie is Dangerous Liaisons, her actual favorite movie is Weekend at Bernie’s. While some us have “favorite” and an actual favorite movie, I have a favorite breakfast food (eggs), and an actual favorite breakfast food (chocolate chip scones). The chocolate chip scones that I have every once in a blue moon are from a one-of-a-kind bakery near my family’s home in Pennsylvania. I’ve never had a chocolate chip scone from anywhere else that was nearly worth the calories that must be in these things. Calling them “breakfast” is even a little bit of a stretch since they’re so sweet, rich and probably butter laden. Since I don’t live in Pennsylvania anymore, and as a side note, shouldn’t be counting butter as a dairy serving in order to justify eating these, I decided to make my own from a recipe based on one that I found in Joy of Baking. Anything that […]

I have a mild obsession with scones. Though not nearly as crave-able as cookies and admittedly easier to step away from than cake, scones are a much under sung baked good. If you like the occasional sweet treat – one that you can eat morning, noon, or night, then you’ll want to focus here. They’re even a hit when you over bake them a little bit. Ahem. Scones are traditional cooked pastries that are simple and easy to make, and delicious to eat. Cherry and lime are a fun combination because cherries are so reminiscent of summer, especially in the Midwest where Michigan cherries are just a stone’s throw away. Limes are one of those things that most people have in their fridge, even people who rarely turn their ovens on because hello, Corona. If your experience with scones is limited to the ones that you press your face up to the bakery case at Starbucks to drool over before the barista quietly asks you to leave, you’ll love how simple this recipe is to make and how impressed people will look when you say you’ve made scones.

I think there is a difference between people who like food and people who like to eat. My non-scientific, subjective definition is that someone who likes food cares about the ingredients they use, where the things they eat come from and how to prepare the ingredients with flavors that will enhance or complement their taste. Alternatively, people who like to eat care less about what they’re eating than the fact that they’re eating. Greasy French fries? Bring it. Sub-par diner lasagna? They’ll have seconds. Sometimes, the people who like to eat also like food, but not always. I’ve always liked to eat. And while I’ve never been a Dorito-chomping fast-food shoveler, I’ve always been an eater. Yet, over the past few years, I’ve taken a more invested interest in food, cooking and the ingredients that I use. Some might use the term food snob but that just sounds so…well, snobby. Before I started this blog, I thought a lemon was a lemon. I knew that there were hundreds of varieties of apples and more types of squash than there are days of the week but it wasn’t until I entered food blogdom did I learn what a Meyer lemon is.

The first time I’d ever had a scone was from a local bakery that my mother and I love. By love, I mean, we talk about going there three days before we actually do and will travel out of our way to go to the CVS next door just so we can pop in “since we’re right here.” After discovering my love of chocolate chip scones I set out to make my own. In the past year, I’ve made a few different versions, like pumpkin, blueberry and now cranberry, from a recipe that of the seasonal sort that struck me as slightly less indulgent than the ones I’d been eating from the bakery. Even though I still wouldn’t call these health food, they’re probably less indulgent than the kind you’d pick up at a high-quality bakery. I like to go out to eat as much as the next person but there is something to be said for cooking at home and knowing exactly what is going in your food – or in this case, how much butter.
