Sara Lee pound cake was pretty much a staple in my freezer growing up. It was what my mother would serve guests and a great breakfast treat when we were feeling especially decadent (or more likely, when my mom was feeling particularly averse to preparing breakfast, because what child doesn’t want to eat any kind of cake for breakfast? One of my pet peeves in the food blogging world (I know, this is a happy place, but sometimes I really can’t resist some cheese with my whine)…is the constant belittling of any food item that isn’t 100% from scratch homemade. The same cooks who were once horrified by the idea of using processed cheese, today get paid to use the same product to make bacon cheddar honey mustard monkey bread grilled cheese sandwiches that will go viral on Pinterest. Before I paint myself as a big fat hypocrite, here is what I think about homemade, scratch cooking and baking: it’s glorious, when you have time to do it. Time is a luxury we don’t all have, especially when we’re away from home for 9-10 hours a day at our j-o-b. Maybe if you live on a farm, you’re churning your own butter, baking your own […]

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #EffortlessPies #CollectiveBias. The phrase “as American as apple pie” is a little unfair. It’s limiting the ubiquitous enjoyment of pie that many Americans experience on a regular basis to one pie variety. Completely unfair to every other pie out there that happens to be just as delicious and decadent as apple pies can be. Speaking of decadence, have you tried salted caramel pumpkin pie? If you haven’t, then you should. I believe that one of the reasons why people avoid making pie is because then, they’ll have a whole pie to eat. I make pies when I know it will be well received by a crowd of people happy to help me polish off slices…or when I know I can unload my pie on my unsuspecting coworkers. That’s where Keebler® Ready Crust® Mini Graham Cracker Pie Crust comes in. You can make simple, delicious pies that are magically portion controlled so even if you happen to demolish an entire pie, it’s a tiny pie, so the damage done is minimal. They’re easy to find in the baking aisle at Walmart, grouped with other pie supplies. I love baking with […]

With the designer cupcake craze finally winding down and Cronuts getting a dirty reputation, the world is ripe for its next dessert phenomenon. Luckily author Lucy Baker is at the ready with 75 recipes for spirited sweets in her cookbook, The Boozy Baker. While the bakers of the world decide what the next big phenomenon in desserts will be, feed those sweet cravings with some delectable desserts that you can whip up at home. Oh and did I mention they all contain booze? That’s right, your new favorite cookbook contains 100 recipes for spirited sweets and cocktails. I had the pleasure of throwing some questions at the author, a girl that has professed such a love of champagne that she says she would put it on her cereal. I think we are in good hands here. IGT: How did you learn how to bake? LB: I have always loved to bake. I have fond memories of preparing boxed cake mixes and slathering them with store-bought chocolate frosting when I was a little girl. I started baking more and more after college, when I moved to New York City. It was a way to relax and unwind after a hectic day. IGT: What inspires […]

I might not be a dietitian but I do believe in eating healthily. Contrary to the photograph above, which is essentially dripping with chocolate, I think that a healthy diet includes a lot of vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and healthy fat like avocado. Now, I certainly don’t always practice what I preach, as evidenced by the deep chocolate brownies you’re staring at, but I do think that part of being healthy means indulging from time to time. I also think it means cooking at home whenever possible. I think that a salad you make for yourself will taste fresher than something you open from a bag and I think that a brownie you bake yourself will be more satisfying than one that comes vacuum sealed from the grocery store…in moderation, of course. This week, In Good Taste was featured as one of July’s Blogs of the Month on Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution is a national movement to change the way that America eats by helping them cook more at home and eat less processed foods. Oliver’s Food Revolution is about something very important to me: inspiring people to get back to basics and start cooking […]

As if I needed an excuse to make cheesecake, my mother sent me an email this past weekend asking if she could write a guest post on In Good Taste. Since the recipe she wanted to share is so-good-it-should-be-illegal good, I obliged (among other reasons). I did a little baking yesterday and snapped some photos to accompany her post. By Daryl Callahan I have asked Maris if I could contribute a guest post here so that I could honor my brother Glenn. Glenn was my brother and best friend, a kind sensitive boy with a heart of gold. Stubborn? Yes, but that’s because he always knew he was right…and looking back he probably was! He aspired to be a comedy writer and director and he would have been very successful but he died on October 1, 1974 at the age of 20, from an inoperable brain tumor. When we were kids, sometime in the late 50’s, we pretended to get married. We even pretended my doll – whom we named Beth – was our daughter. As we grew up, every year on January 4 – through college – we sent each other anniversary cards. His kind spirit was not just […]
