Blueberry and lemon are two of my favorite flavors. Though I have the willpower to resist most pastries when I want to (let’s just not talk about soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies), the tartness of lemon and blueberries tends to balance out the sweetness of coffee cake, quick bread, cookies or scones. Or Blueberry Lemon Cake. So what if I talk about baked goods like most connoisseurs talk about wine? When fresh blueberries and bright, tart lemon zest are involved, it’s hard to go wrong. I mean, there are ways. You could sub baking powder for baking soda, and you could mistake the salt for the sugar, but I don’t really know how you’d manage that. Let’s not overthink this. It was hard to decide whether to call this a bread or a cake. It has all of the qualities of a quick bread, with all of the wondrousness of a cake. Because people like cake (like, a lot), I’m calling it a cake. I’m nothing if I’m not a people pleaser. Regardless of what we call it, what we have here is a really lovely and simple Blueberry Lemon Cake or Bread recipe. It’s perfect for brunch, perfect for effortless […]

Instead of waking up and baking cinnamon rolls from scratch, which can be a lengthy endeavor, try this “naan traditional” deconstructed version with Stonefire Authentic Flatbreads, cinnamon, sugar, butter and homemade icing. Living in the city, I don’t consider fast food to be much of a temptation. Sure, I’ll fall prey to the occasional temptation of ordering pizza here and there, but I can’t remember the last time I’ve hit a fast food chain. When you live in a place where most of your shopping happens at a mall, rife with fast food joints, it’s not so easy to resist the siren song of the aroma that wafts from a cinnamon roll stand. Luckily, there’s another option and it starts with Stonefire Authentic Flatbreads. These deconstructed cinnamon roll flatbreads are the perfect breakfast in bed treat, especially with Valentine’s Day on the horizon. When you want to surprise someone with breakfast before they wake up, it needs to be quick and it needs to be stealth, or your mission will be intercepted by someone who smells bacon cooking and wants to know when their coffee is ready. That is to say if you’re planning on baking cinnamon rolls, you’d better hope […]

Imagine your favorite bagel with lox, cream cheese, capers and red onions…in a “naan traditional” way. Skip the bagel and opt for a Stonefire Authentic Flatbread with all of the fixings for a perfect brunch treat. I grew up in New Jersey, which happens to be a state that is portrayed really, really terribly on cable television. Despite the Jersey Shore and the city of Newark, New Jersey has plenty of lovely towns and even some culture and history. From the time I was three until I went to college, I lived in Plainsboro, a tiny town adjacent to Princeton of Princeton University fame, which is a formal rural farming town turned suburban oasis for transplants from New York and Philadelphia. Award winning sports teams, 96% college admissions rate, a lot of fenced in backyards. As a teenager, it was the most boring place on earth and of course, I hated it. Once I hit college in Pennsylvania which a large population from the great garden state, I realized that despite it’s reputation as the “Armpit of America” people seemed to have an inordinate amount of state pride. Women proudly described themselves as “Jersey girls” and suddenly, Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen were a […]

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #BringYourBestBowl #Target #CollectiveBias In this recipe, creamy and delicious oatmeal combines with the indulgent taste of coconut cream pie for a breakfast that will transport you to a tropical vacation. Living in Chicago during the winter months, my daydreams typically involve beaches and frozen beverages, even though neither of those things are within reach during the long, cold months of January, February and March. On days that you wish you were poolside but the weather is better suited for cold weather comfort food, you can combine the two: coconut cream pie oatmeal. Oatmeal is a great go-to for breakfast, especially in the winter when you crave something that will stick to your ribs during the morning commute. As it so happens, Quaker® is currently hosting their National Bring Your Best Bowl Contest, where anyone can enter a recipe for a chance to win $250,000. The winning recipe entries will be created and sold in stores for a limited time this fall (Just keep in mind recipes should be two to five ingredients – simple!). The contest is underway and will end on March 12, 2016. Winners will be announced in […]

It’s arguably old news that the holiday entertaining season is about over, but for some people, it never really ends. Earlier in the year, I hosted what turned out to be a wonderful pre-holiday brunch for some of my extended family. Even though the intent was to celebrate the holidays, you could easily replicate this winter brunch menu anytime throughout the season. A fun, mid-winter brunch party will give your guests ones something fun to look forward to during the inevitable gray, gloomy days of January and February. A lot of my relatives live in New York, which like Chicago, is fun and festive prior to the holidays but after January 1, there isn’t much to look forward to, weather-wise, until Memorial Day. You might be in New Year’s resolutions mode, so this simple brunch can be catered to just about any diet — such as low carb or even gluten-free — and is pretty easy to execute. Even decorating for your party can be stress-free and inexpensive. The Decor Thanks to Pinterest, rustic chic is now a thing and what that means is that if you don’t have 6 or 8 or 12 plates that happen to match, you don’t need to. Set […]
