Whenever I’m hosting a brunch, my menu generally looks something like this: a sweet pastry (chocolate chip sconesare one of my favorites); smoked salmon, a dozen bagels and at least three different types of cream cheese from the bagel shop in our neighborhood; a bottle (or three) of champagne and a carafe of orange juice; a seasonal fresh fruit and yogurt parfait bar and of course, a baked egg dish that I can make the night before and bake off in the morning. In the egg category, one of my favorite go-to recipes is this spinach and cheese strata that is rich, savory and perfect. With the holiday season in full-swing, egg casseroles always make me think of the movie, “The Family Stone.” Sarah Jessica Parker’s character meets her boyfriend’s parents for the first time and though everything is going terribly, she insists on making her family strata recipe for brunch, only to drop it all on the floor. I had a nice internal chuckle when Brad told me, shortly after we began dating, that his family always had a breakfast casserole on Christmas Day – I won’t be making the Messerveys a breakfast casserole anytime soon out of sheer […]

All opinions are mine alone. #12DaysofPancakes #CollectiveBias The end of the year is the best time for entertaining or opening your home to friends. I’m a big believer that whether you’re making a special meal for family or entertaining a big group of friends, there is no easier way to impress than to make brunch. Delicious and fluffy chai spiced pancakes are the perfect crowd pleaser. As much as I like to go out to dinner and even on some nights, order in, I rarely do either of those things for breakfast. Sure, there’s the occasional weekend brunch out with friends, where mimosas are usually involved, but more often in the morning, I crave something that is simple, creative and of course, delicious. Aunt Jemima Original Pancake Mix was a staple in the kitchen when I was growing up and Aunt Jemima pancakes have a classic taste that never gets old. I mean…who doesn’t like pancakes? And speaking of pancakes…syrup. Luckily, both Aunt Jemima Original Syrup and Aunt Jemima Original Pancake Mix are available at most grocery stores, including Walmart Supercenter.

Finding healthy alternatives for cooking and baking is always desirable, but not always easy. Over the past few years, we have been hearing about coconut oil everywhere. Whether you’re on a website that caters to beauty junkies or foodies, you are going to see something about coconut oil. Lately, coconut oil is booming in the world of cooking and baking. There are so many benefits to using it in place of high-fat, high-calorie cooking oils (think: butter). We spoke with Jennifer Aaronson, editorial director of food and entertaining at Martha Stewart Living magazine, who recently worked on a “Better Bake Sale” story about using healthier alternatives to white flour, oil and food coloring. She gave us some inside scoop about baking (and cooking) with coconut oil. IGT: What benefit do you see coconut oil having over other substitutes in baking like yogurt and apple sauce? JA: Yogurt and apple sauce lack the fat content needed to make a baked good truly moist and luscious. Coconut oil gives that great mouth feel and texture to baked goods that one expects. IGT: Are there benefits of using coconut oil other than it being very healthy? JA: It is super tasty! Also, it […]

At Blahnik Baker, a dessert and lifestyle blog where I share my passion for delicious desserts. I love creating elegant sweets for everyday celebrations and from time to time my family’s favorite comfort food of the season. These apple cider donuts are our new fall favorite. When I think of fall, apple cider is one of the first things that comes to mind. Here in Upstate NY, when the leaves start turning yellow and apples are ready for picking, we cozy up with hot apple cider, apple fritters and/or apple cider donuts. I am sure you know what I mean right? Nothing beats the warm spices of freshly brewed hot apple cider. These apple cider donuts are just what you want to wake up to on a crisp fall morning. All you need is 30 minutes to assemble and you will have a breakfast bursting with fall flavors. They are soft, baked with cinnamon and nutmeg, browned butter and topped off with cinnamon sugar. Grab a cup of coffee, some tranquility and enjoy the day. I hope you enjoy these!

If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, why do we only eat it once? I know that some of you out there can cheerfully eat anything in the morning – pizza, a turkey sandwich, leftover brisket with mashed potatoes…not me. If it wasn’t marketed specifically as breakfast and isn’t a chocolate chip cookie (because those aren’t marketed as breakfast but I think they should be) then your chances are that I won’t want to look at it before about 12:30 p.m. Or if I’ve worked out in the morning, maybe 11:30 a.m. While I might be picky about what I’ll cook the morning, I’m not picky about how I cook it. You can make a quesadilla – traditionally lunch or dinner fare – in an unconventional way: on your grill. If you have an indoor/electric grill, this is especially easy for frosty winter mornings when you want a warm breakfast without fuss.
