You have a party to go to and you’d really like to bring your hostess a gift but you don’t want to spend money (admit it). That’s where miniature quick breads come in. You need a gift for that friend who has everything. You have a baking itch Tuesday afternoon but you’d rather save your cake-and-cookie calories for Saturday night. Again, time to turn on the oven. In any event, miniature quick breads are a great solution when you need a quick gift or want to send your guests home with an edible treat after your next get-together. One of these miniature loaves is the perfect size to cut a slice of for a snack or breakfast. You can present them wrapped in foil or plastic wrap but a much nicer way to deliver these goods is to bake them in paper loaf pans. Wrap them in cellophane and you’re good to go. You can even bake a batch of these and stash half in the freezer so you’re never without a homemade snack on hand.

Remember the Bread Baker’s Apprentice Challenge? Well, that’s okay. I don’t either. Last May (or maybe it was June?) I signed on to bake my way through Peter Reinhart’s book, The Bread Baker’s Apprentice, along with a bunch of other bloggers who would be baking their way through the book. The rules, very Julie-and-Julia style, were that you had to bake each bread from A-Z, no skipping, at a clip that suited you. For awhile I baked a bread each week, sometimes two breads. That didn’t last long. So here we are, on #20, which is actually a bread that I would make again and again. I’ve made it twice since my initial trial and love that you can shape it into a lovely little boule, my favorite bread to bake or follow the instructions for a more traditional loaf. If you’re serving a heavy meal like pasta but bread on the table is non-negotiable, this is a good one to try. It’s full of grains so you’ll get a dose of filling fiber and wind up eating less bread and saving more room for the main dish, whatever that may be. We aren’t blogging the recipes (buy the book!) but […]

In the past year I’ve learned a lot of things. I’ve learned that it’s possible to get along with people you won’t always agree with. I’ve learned that I need to keep the door to my balcony open and exhaust fan on when I turn my oven higher than 450 degrees or the smoke alarm will sound. I taught myself how to make pizza dough from scratch and I learned a little bit about HTML coding (I still can’t do it, but I know what it IS and that’s more than I could have said a year ago). I’ve learned how to successfully navigate the taxi lines at JFK Airport, a task that once seemed intimidating for me to do on my own. I’ve learned that the world won’t come crashing down around me if I put on ten pounds (but my favorite jeans might not fit as well. That’s what department stores are for). I’ve learned all these things since I began blogging approximately a year ago (a year ago yesterday to be exact). While many bloggers celebrate their one year “blog-iversary” with an essay about why their blog has been meaningful to them or an image of a […]
