If you watch the weather channel in Chicago, I know what you’re thinking. “One sunny day all year and she’s already making smoothies?” Well, yes. And with good reason.
You see, I spent last weekend visiting the lovely Dana of Dana Treat fame which I well tell you more about later, but in a nutshell: it rained a lot, we ate a lot and I didn’t work out one bit in the five days that I was in Seattle (unless you count a few heated games of hide and go seek with Dana’s four- and six- year old).
Inspired by the fact that Dana and her family are exemplary healthy eaters (her six-year old told me his favorite food is salad. Can you set a better example than that?) I decided to play a little game when I got home called “eat more fruits and vegetables and less of everything else.”
Then, I discovered the Smoothie. I’ve had a blender sitting in a box for about six months and while I’ve contemplated the occasional frozen margarita, winter in Chicago is no time for frosty cocktails and thus it sat untouched. Until a few days ago when I raided my freezer of frozen fruit and began experimenting.
I’ve tried a few different varieties over the past few days and this is by far my favorite yet. It’s refreshing, filling and because peach and mango are both free from seeds, it has a perfect smooth texture.
Now, all it needs is a little rum, a beach towel and 85 degree weather and we could almost call it a vacation in a glass.
- ½ cup water (you can add milk if you want the protein)
- ½ mango, peeled pitted (or ¾ cup mango chunks, frozen)
- 1 medium peach, halved, pitted (or ¾ cup peach slices, frozen)
- 1 Tablespoon honey
- 1 cup ice cups (omit if using frozen fruit)
- Place all ingredients into a blender in the order listed. Secure lid. Select the "Smoothies" or "Frozen Drink" program if your blender has one, otherwise pulse until all ingredients are smooth.

March 22, 2011 at 10:41 pmThis recipe looks SO good! University student with very little to no fresh fruit served in the cafeteria? The blender has been a lifesaver (hopefully not literally). Can’t wait to try this one out!

March 19, 2011 at 12:35 pmI met Dana last fall when she visited NYC and I am SO jealous that you got to spend a week with her. After spending an afternoon together I was pretty sure I could spend the rest of my life with her and be super happy. 😛
I love the sound of this smoothie! Mangoes are my absolute FAVORITE fruit! i really should incorporate more smoothies into my life. I should also really buy a blender.
