The first time I drank alcohol (you know…on my twenty-first birthday…) I drank Kahlua.
I was with three of my girlfriends at a sleepover that was not so much different from the other sleepovers that we had in high school where we would eat junk food, watch movies and talk about the boys we liked.
And sometimes, call said boys and hang up, in a fit of giggles, when they picked up the phone (I think that’s how we stalked our crushes, pre-Facebook).
On this particular winter night, my friend Kristen had commandeered a tiny bottle of vodka and a small bottle of Kahlua (looking back it was probably not enough booze to even leave one of us even feeling tipsy…but boy, did we think we were badass).
We mixed some amateur cocktails and probably stopped after a drink each because we were scared of our parents finding out (I told you…we were badass).
Now that it’s getting colder – if you’re of legal drinking age – if it’s too chilly outside to imagine drinking anything on the rocks, whip up a batch of your favorite hot cocoa and spike it with Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha.
It will not only warm you up, but help put you in the holiday spirit no matter what you celebrate.
- 2 parts milk
- 1 part drinking (hot) chocolate
- 1 part Kahlua Peppermint Mocha
- Bring milk to a simmer on the stovetop. Whisk in drinking chocolate. Simmer for 30 seconds while stirring and add Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha. Garnish with peppermint stick or marshmallows.

December 21, 2010 at 3:44 pmWhy was it always Kahlua? I had a very similar night way back when…but sub in Malibu for vodka. Blech.

This hot chocolate sounds fantastic! I could definitely warm up with that on these cold nights!
