This quick and simple recipe for shrimp and grits is so simple. Made with lemon, garlic fresh herbs, it’s a simple dish perfect for a weeknight dinner or to serve dinner party guests. Growing up, my family seldom traveled. I was 14 or 15 the first time I took a flight and if we did go someplace for a long weekend, it was to visit friends in the Northeastern tristate area. Even though the town I grew up in was culturally diverse, I was an adult before I learned how geographically diverse the United States really is and with that, how geographically diverse our food culture is. I really love coastal southern food. A few of my favorite cities are in the South, Austin, Charleston, Savannah, and whenever I see fried green tomatoes, pulled pork sliders, fried chicken or shrimp and grits on a menu, I’m pretty psyched, and not just because that also means there’s likely to be an excessively gluttonous macaroni and cheese on the menu, too. Even though I’ve made several trips to the South, including a week in Charleston that resulted in a cooking class and the purchase of several cookbooks, I first tasted shrimp and grits for […]

I think it’s safe to say that the majority of vegetarians and vegans are very mindful when it comes to the food they put into their bodies. One of the first things we’re always asked by meat eaters is how we get our protein. Very seldom do people ask about our calcium in-take. However, that is just as important! The government recommends that adults, ages 19-50, should consume 1000 mg of calcium per day. One cup of milk has 296 mg, but there are plenty of plant-based calcium sources that taste great and are easy to incorporate into your daily diet. This salad recipe is full of calcium to help your bones stay strong and healthy! This recipe makes about five servings and can be stored in the refrigerator for about two days. And if you do add fish to your diet every now and then, this salad would be the perfect dish to pair it with! Both salmon and halibut are packed full of vitamin D, which will allow your body to better metabolize the calcium. Let me know what you think of the recipe. Nutritional Benefits: Figs: Just four figs provide about 100 milligrams of calcium. But they […]

So, as you can see, things are looking a little bit different around here. After many many weeks of driving my designer crazy, In Good Taste finally has a new look, a new layout and will soon be launching some new features, new columns and of course, new recipes. That’s a whole lot of new. But it’s fitting. This whole “new year” has, so far, been all about new, which is both good and bad depending on whether you’re a glass half-full or a glass half-empty kind of person. Me? I’d like to tell you I’m a glass-half-full gal, but that isn’t exactly the truth.Whether your glass is half-empty, half-full or whatever it’s entirely possible that it will be difficult to embrace new things. Some changes are easier to adjust to than others but some are difficult. For example: new jobs, new schedules — new recipes. You had to know I was going to bring this little diatribe back to food eventually, right? Salmon is one of those things that I cook fairly often for myself but never thought it to be especially noteworthy – or worth sharing. I mean, everyone knows how to cook salmon, right? Well, maybe. But […]
