There are very few things that will get me out of bed at 7:00 a.m. on a Saturday. Among those reasons: a television segment, a flight and probably the fire alarm. St. Patrick’s Day has never before fallen under that category. Luckily I’ve never had to test that theory. Now we can add a fourth thing to the list: dyeing the Chicago River green in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day with Country Financial. First, I have a confession to make. Until this year, I’ve never been to Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration. For the first couple of years I lived here, I was out of town for the festivities. For the past few years, I’ve celebrated with my friends by going out to brunch, or doing some good old fashioned day drinking in the afternoon. I had never been to the river dyeing, a tradition since 1961 that attracts hundreds of thousands of people each year. According to Mental Floss, the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local was instrumental in the inception of the tradition. In the early days of his administration as Mayor of Chicago, Richard J. Daley was a man on a mission to develop the city’s riverfront area. There was just one problem: The river […]

I have a very Irish last name but know very little about the actual Irish culture. I know they have a soccer team. I know that Guiness comes from Ireland. And I know that the flag is a vibrant green, white and orange. I also know that the arts play a great role in the lives of the Irish – they’re famous for bagpipes. Or wait – maybe that’s Scotland? See? I have a lot to learn. I might not know Ireland but if there is one thing I know, it’s bread. I’m not big on corned beef and I could take or leave cabbage, so when March 17 rolls around, I think Irish Soda Bread. This recipe, which I pulled from a blog and now I can’t remember whose, let’s you kick off St. Patrick’s Day early. Unless of course, you’ve already started celebrating.

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. Also known as National Drink a Guinness Day (I totally just made that up) St. Patricks Day takes on new meaning as you get older. In college, St. Patrick’s Day meant skipping class to drink beer (or if you lived near campus, drinking beer before class). There was no corned beef or cabbage and the only potatoes involved in celebrating the holiday were late night French fries at the bar. When you’re in your twenties, St. Patrick’s Day becomes something of a blur – if you live in a city that holds a celebration, it might mean an exhausting whirlwind of parades and pub crawls. It might mean a baked Irish Soda Bread to bring into work, maybe a brunch that involves alcoholic beverages because, hey – it’s a holiday – but other than the occasional celebratory cocktail, St. Patrick’s Day falls a little short on the Exciting Holiday Spectrum. When you’re in your thirties, sometimes you forget it’s going to be St. Patricks Day altogether. Enter, Foodily. As you know, I’ve been working as a brand ambassador for Foodily for the past several months and have spent a lot of time […]
