All opinions are mine alone. #SavvySnacking #CollectiveBias For your next snack fix, try Lorissa’s Kitchen high-protein, low-carb snacks paired with an avocado matcha smoothie topped with fresh mint. “Farm-to-table” is a big buzzword in food but when you think about it, nearly every food product begins on a farm. Wheat, meat, dairy or produce all eventually begin on a farm. “Farm to table” is more than just a definition, but it’s a cultural ideal, and lots of us spend a great deal of time and effort seeking the lifestyle that the “farm to table” phenomenon implies: active, balanced and responsible. Lorissa’s Kitchen, a satisfying healthy snack to help fuel your day, is helping us live that farm-to-table lifestyle with a delicious, portable protein snack. Lorissa’s Kitchen snacks are high in protein, low in carbs and low in fat, available in several globally-inspired flavors, including Lorissa’s Kitchen Korean Barbeque Beef, Lorissa’s Kitchen Sweet Chili Pork and Lorissa’s Kitchen Szechuan Peppercorn Beef. My office is big on snacks, and we’re always excited to find low-carb options to keep in the kitchen for mid-afternoon snack attacks. Even though I’m sure you’ll begin to see these bad boys on shelves everywhere, start by […]

Everyone says that when you’re in college, you pile on your “Freshman 15” because you’re drinking beer and fruity spiked punch (we can hardly call Jungle Juice a “cocktail” now, can we?) plus eating indulgent late night munchies, like pizza, chips and microwavable macaroni and cheese. I won’t sit here and say that I didn’t hoard my share of Easy Mac in my dorm or pretend I never participated in the illicit off campus party, but I will also credit some of the weight I gained in college, and would subsequently lose every summer, to a daily chai latte from the on-campus coffee shop. Chai lattes are one of those things that you don’t realize is adding up, both in calories and cost, if you indulge in them regularly. Though it’s easy enough to make a latte at home, we’re going to do you one better and turn the delicious chai latte into a delicious vanilla chai smoothie. With no bias against full-fat dairy, blending chai-infused almond milk with Greek yogurt will create a thick, rich-tasting consistency without hidden sugar or calories. If you make this once and decide you can never again go a day without it, you can […]

I had been yearning for a blender for quite some time so I was thrilled this past October when my mom surprised me with one for my birthday. And I have been on a homemade smoothie making craze ever since. Event though juicing is all the craze these days, I asked for a blender this year instead of a juicer as I figured there was more I could create with it. I’ve had a lot of fun with it by adding interesting ingredients like spinach, rice protein powder, dates, hemp seed, flax seed and more. Here are three of my favorite concoctions to date, but for more of the smoothies I’ve created check out my “Smoothies I’ve Made” board on Pinterest.

If you watch the weather channel in Chicago, I know what you’re thinking. “One sunny day all year and she’s already making smoothies?” Well, yes. And with good reason. You see, I spent last weekend visiting the lovely Dana of Dana Treat fame which I well tell you more about later, but in a nutshell: it rained a lot, we ate a lot and I didn’t work out one bit in the five days that I was in Seattle (unless you count a few heated games of hide and go seek with Dana’s four- and six- year old). Inspired by the fact that Dana and her family are exemplary healthy eaters (her six-year old told me his favorite food is salad. Can you set a better example than that?) I decided to play a little game when I got home called “eat more fruits and vegetables and less of everything else.” Then, I discovered the Smoothie. I’ve had a blender sitting in a box for about six months and while I’ve contemplated the occasional frozen margarita, winter in Chicago is no time for frosty cocktails and thus it sat untouched. Until a few days ago when I raided my freezer […]
