In September, I visited Arizona for the first time, spending three days in Mesa and three days in Phoenix, with a few brief stops in the Scottsdale area. In between some fabulous restaurants, I attended a tour and tasting at the Queen Creek Olive Mill as a guest of Visit Mesa, which was easily one of the highlights of the trip (beside sitting by the pool at The Wigwam, but we’ve already talked about that. Queen Creek is owned by a husband and wife team, the former a child to first generation Italian immigrants. Going into the project with the intention of producing olive oil solely as a hobby, they planed 1,000 olive trees on 100 acres in the city of Queen Creek. With an eventual goal of providing the Arizona community with fresh, local, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, they later built a 5,000 square foot shed that soon transformed into today’s sprawling Queen Creek Olive Mill, Cafe and Marketplace. The working olive mill offers […]

It’s the first weekend in December and while there might have been a time when I enjoyed holiday shopping in crowded malls and department stores, that time is not now. Most of my holiday shopping has been relegated to the internet in lieu of my preferred activity, holiday entertaining. Before we break for the weekend, we have a few favorite things to share with you. Cheeky Home: One of the only things that ever keeps me from cooking is the thought of doing the dishes when I’m finished. Cheeky is a brand-new line of fun and colorful tableware that marries style and design with social responsibility. Not only can you set your dinner table fashionably with bold, bright paper and plastic tableware — from plates, bowls, napkins to cold cups, hot cups and cutlery — you can mix and match prints to create and customize your own unique place setting. Cheeky is also helping to fight hunger in America: for every Cheeky item purchased at Target, Cheeky will donate the monetary equivalent of a meal to Feeding America. The Feeding America network of food banks then provides food to adults, children and seniors across the country. Marvelous Red 2011: A bold and spicy red from Marvelous Wines, a […]

Even while reveling in the festivities surrounding the December holidays, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the stress of finding the perfect gifts for your family, friends and loved ones. Whether you’re shopping for a fanatical foodie or a hostess with the mostess, it’s safe to assume that a gift for the kitchen will be well received. (Editor’s Note: unless you happen to be dating me, which I have on good authority that you are not, do not apply this advice to your girlfriend or significant other unless you have been granted explicit permission to wrap a cutting board under the Christmas tree). To aid those of you who have a cook or two on your nice list or have been given the green light to hit the home goods department, there are plenty of gift ideas that will make playing Santa more gratifying than ever before. Keurig Elite B48 Coffee Maker: Something special is brewing this year and I’m sure that line has never been used before. Kick off 2014 with an extra jolt of caffeine from a 6-, 10- or 12-ounce single serving of your favorite bean blend. $145, wayfair.com.
