Whenever I catch the start of an Iron Chef episode (which usually happens around midnight, when I should be going to bed), there are certain secret ingredients that I hope to see, like fresh strawberries, that will make me stay up for another hour to watch the results. Then there are the ingredients that will almost definitely make me turn off the TV and go to bed, not out of anger or frustration (well maybe just a little), but because I don’t find it beneficial for me to stay up to watch someone prepare mackerel five ways. I mean, how many ways are there to make fish, really? Goodnight mackerel. Goodnight moon. The ingredients that I hope to see when the magical metal lid is lifted in that cloud of dry ice are more along the lines of, well…fruit. Citrus. Berries. You get the idea. Foods that so kindly lend themselves to savory and sweet as well. An Iron Chef episode with no sweet dishes is a sad time for me. One secret ingredient that would float my culinary boat would be the strawberry. I have yet to catch a Battle Strawberry on Iron Chef, but rest assured that it […]

You’ve been indulging for weeks. You might have eaten a few salads here and there as post party penance but let’s be honest: most of us wait until January to kick our resolutions into high gear. With New Years Day falling on a Saturday this year, you have a double-whammy of an excuse to hit the party scene: it’s Friday and it’s the celebration of one year’s passing and another’s beginning. One door closing, another opening…or something like that. Instead of starting the new year off with egg whites, kick it off with a serious brunch spread. Here are some of the top recipes from In Good Taste, and some other great food blogs, to make your brunch a better one this year. Peanut Butter Banana Bread is the perfect way to fill your bread basket for guests. Cranberry Mimosa (as seen on WGN-TV) are the best alternative to OJ if you want to switch things up. I also like a little pomegranate juice but that tends to be pricier. Hoppin’ John is said to bring good luck when eaten on New Year’s Day! I like this version but you can also add extra veggies and of course, double the bacon. […]

I sometimes describe myself as a person who is always “peeking over the fence.” No matter what I’ve done, accomplished or earned, I always have my eye on the next step. The next promotion, the nicer apartment, the faster mile pace on the treadmill, the smaller dress size (um, or something). Having just moved to a new apartment and lacking an internet connection, I haven’t been able to keep up with blogging as much as I would have liked. I scheduled a few posts ahead of time but today, the well was dry. No photos, no blog-worthy recipes in the queue. So, using the sliver of signal I’ve managed to muster thanks to Comcast Bill I thought I’d do a new kind of post. So for once, rather than looking ahead, I’m going to take a moment to look back and reflect on my accomplishments during the month of November. Here, you’ll find a round-up of the recipes I posted in November, some my own creations and some shared by cookbooks, magazines and blogs. Breakfast, Bread & Muffins Cranberry Cornmeal Quick Bread Pumpkin Apple Harvest Muffins Spinach & Cheddar Breakfast Bake with Chicken Sausage Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls Not-So-Bad-For-You Banana […]
