You have a party to go to and you’d really like to bring your hostess a gift but you don’t want to spend money (admit it). That’s where miniature quick breads come in. You need a gift for that friend who has everything. You have a baking itch Tuesday afternoon but you’d rather save your cake-and-cookie calories for Saturday night. Again, time to turn on the oven. In any event, miniature quick breads are a great solution when you need a quick gift or want to send your guests home with an edible treat after your next get-together. One of these miniature loaves is the perfect size to cut a slice of for a snack or breakfast. You can present them wrapped in foil or plastic wrap but a much nicer way to deliver these goods is to bake them in paper loaf pans. Wrap them in cellophane and you’re good to go. You can even bake a batch of these and stash half in the freezer so you’re never without a homemade snack on hand.

Last week I wrote a series of Thanksgiving side dish recipes for Craft Magazine. It was a fun series, and one that challenged me because all of the recipes had to be gluten-free. I don’t have any dietary restrictions or sensitivities (unless you count the fact that I hate chocolate and peanut butter together. I do. I know I’m a freak of nature) so I rarely pay attention to whether or not my recipes are gluten free. Even so, sometimes it’s fun to think outside the box, especially when you’re facing the biggest food holiday of the year. So, if you have time, visit the Thanksgiving series on Craftzine.com for more holiday inspiration. In the meantime, I’m going to tide you over with a creamy soup, a thick consistency that tastes so much more indulgent then it is. Curry lends a deep, earthy and exotic flavor and a dollop of creme fraiche is all this soup needs to be an elegant starter to your Thanksgiving dinner.

It’s pumpkin season. Pumpkin recipes all over the Internet, pumpkins growing in fields at the farm, pumpkins on display at the grocery store and pumpkins as table decorations. You get the idea. I think you know where this is going, right? Some of my favorite recipes are pumpkin-packed and what better a time of year to use the canned pumpkin that I have been hoarding from my neighborhood grocery store? Yes, yes. Most of my recipes utilize canned vs. fresh pumpkin. You see, pumpkin carving is a messy sport. I am my own housekeeper. That’s all there is to it. So, without further ado, if you did what I did and ordered a case of canned pumpkin from Amazon before it was available in your local supermarket, you should make each and every one of these recipes, like I probably will. Spicy Pepitas If you do take the plunge and opt for fresh pumpkin this year, make the most of it and scoop the seeds for a salty and savory snack. A little spice goes a long way and these are great on their own or as an addition to salads or soups. Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie with Gingersnap Crust […]

One of the hallmarks of a good weekend is good breakfast. I always eat something in the morning, but Monday – Friday breakfast is on the run or at my desk. The weekends though, call for bagels, and bagels in the fall call for pumpkin cream cheese. Though I love breakfast foods – from cereal and milk to oatmeal to waffles to egg white omelets with gooey cheeses and fresh vegetables, my weekday morning meal is often rushed, inhaled at some point between an 8:00 a.m. bus and a 10:00 a.m. meeting. I like starting the morning with something healthy and filling – quick-cooking oatmeal with a sliced banana and a touch of maple syrup, whole-grain cereal with skim milk or Greek yogurt topped with granola and fresh berries. Since my job is busy and my days are usually full of meetings, lunch is sometimes unpredictable so breakfast has to be solid. Which means I have to save the scones, muffin and bagel breakfasts for the weekend. I don’t have time to make eggs when I’m pulling tights on at the same time I’m packing my lunch or drinking coffee while I blow-dry my hair. On the weekends, there’s nothing better than waking up […]

A lot of holidays are prime time for familial drama. It’s the most wonderful time of year, but also for many, the most stressful. Yet, if you ask most people what their favorite holiday is, the majority will choose Thanksgiving, Christmas or Hanukkah. While I’m hardly a scrooge, I think that Christmas is anti-climatic. There’s an entire season, one that grows longer every year, devoted to the winter holidays. There’s caroling, cookies and presents. We have company office parties where someone inevitably has one too many gin and tonics and needs to take a cab home. Yet, December 25 hits and in some families, presents are flung open, gingerbread houses constructed and as soon as it began it’s over with only three dreary months of winter to look forward to. That’s why if you ask me what my favorite holiday is, I probably won’t say Christmas or Hanukkah, but rather Halloween or Thanksgiving. My favorite months of the year are October and November when the leaves change colors on trees and pumpkin decorating is encouraged, if not mandatory. It’s also the month most appropriate for baking pumpkin chocolate chip squares. You can do all kinds of delicious things with pumpkin […]
