Does your table look like this when you sit down to eat a meal? Do you even have a table? In my college apartment, my two roommates and I had a small kitchenette table with four chairs that I think we sat at about three times in two years, opting instead to eat on the stools that surrounded our counter. In my first apartment out of college, we didn’t even own anything that remotely resembled a kitchen table and when I moved to my second apartment, I took with me a kitchen table that I inherited from my parents’ basement. That table traveled (albeit not so well) to Chicago, where it now doubles as my desk from 9-5. Think: stacks of cookbooks, bills, notebooks full of plans and outlines. It’s not exactly fit for ladies who lunch. Even though I don’t have a grandiose kitchen table fit for lavish dinner parties I still like to entertain. I like to have friends over to eat too many finger foods, drink too much wine, laugh too loud and stay out too late. Although paper plates have certainly made the occasional appearance in my kitchen, it’s still possible to pull off a […]

Last week I posted a guest post from my mother that featured a really awesome cheesecake recipe as well as some memories of her late brother, who I never had the chance to meet. Because she was so grateful for and touched by your comments, she insisted that we thank you with a giveaway. I was happy to oblige her since I, too, love reading your comments and thoughts on my posts each and every day (plus, you have to listen to your mom sometimes, right?). With gratitude in mind we decided that the giveaway needed to be fun. Festive. Cake pops are fun. Cake pops are festive. So while I have some great giveaways coming up for you with the rest of the Ten First Kitchen Commandments series, this is a special treat. We are giving you a treat that will let you make treats. We’re giving one reader a Babycakes Cake Pop Maker to help you bring the cake pops trend into your own kitchen. The method is slightly different than the original recipes found around the internet, but there is no denying that they’re equally adorable. And delicious. Not only does this particular cake pop maker let […]

The past few weeks have been…. stress stress stress, blah blah blah. You know it, I’m sure. So without delving into any details that you don’t want to hear (and by you I mean I and by hear I mean type), I’ll just say that I’ve been really, really in need of some good news to fall my way. And it did. First… The good PR folks at Starbucks/Tazo emailed to inform me that thanks to the enthusiasm and support of my blog readers (I always knew there had to be more than four of you) that I had won a very generous gift card to the kitchen store of my choice (I chose Sur La Table without hesitating). It’s extravagant, it’s a humbling and I couldn’t be more excited to ditch my college-grade cookware and stock my kitchen with grown-up goods. Second… Remember how I told you that I have an oven that doesn’t fully open? Well, back in December, I reported said oven to my building manager and I pointed out that not only was it inconvenient, but probably a safety hazard. She basically told me to take it or leave it and here I am. To make […]
