If you love to entertain, but want to do it within a conservative budget, a festive brunch party is a great way to play hostess without breaking the bank. With the holiday season approaching, a fall-themed brunch party is the best way to start a weekend day. I don’t consider brunch to be a B-list meal. In fact, if you do it right, weekend brunch can be the only meal you need to eat all day. You can eat sweet and savory foods together and you can drink cocktails before noon. What could be better? As we look ahead toward the holiday weekend, I’m going to hazard a guess at some point between now and the end of the year, you’ll spend a least one weekend morning skipping your usual “stay-in-bed-til-noon” routine in favor of preparing or attending a meal that is equal parts social and juuuust substantial enough to make you want to follow said meal with an immediate nap. The staples of any brunch party menu, whether you’re throwing the party or bringing a dish to a potluck, are pretty consistent: Something fresh, like a bright green salad with all of the seasonal fixings. In the fall, I like to toss mixed greens with walnuts, blue or […]

Can you tell I’ve been on a slow cooker kick recently? Between making bolognese sauce in the slow cooker and rounding up 10 slow cooker recipes that I’m dying to try, you might say I’m a little bit obsessed with the idea of “set it and forget it.” So, it should come as no surprise that I decided to take three pounds of apples from the farmers’ market and make slow cooker apple butter. I used to claim fall as my favorite season, because of one day in 2006 when I was at my first job in New York City. During my lunch breaks, I would take walks just to get out of the office and get some fresh air. New York in the summer can be kind of disgusting, what with the garbage piled on the streets and high-reaching humidity. Fall there was always, quite literally, a breath of fresh air. I remember taking a walk on a particularly crisp day in early October and feeling hopeful and excited. I was probably excited to do things like pick apples and buy my annual bag of candy corn, bake pumpkin bread, consume copious amounts of apple butter and look forward […]

‘Tis the season where everyone loses their mind over the pumpkin spice latte, but there’s more where that came from — and we’re not just talking about pumpkin pie. There are plenty of uses for the bright orange vegetable and they’re popping up everywhere from festive appetizers to delicious desserts. Read on for some of the best ways to cook and bake with pumpkin for every occasion. 1. Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Marble Cake: This simple egg-free cake is the perfect way to celebrate your love for pumpkin and chocolate, with ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry (via Nerdy Mama). 2. Lightened-Up Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins: Pumpkin, chocolate and only 144 calories. That is, if you can manage not to eat all of them (via Quarter Life (Crisis) Cuisine). 3. Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Oat Bars: Pumpkin and chocolate chip might sound decadent, but it can be healthy, too. Just add oats for these tasty bars that work for dessert, a snack or, in my book, an illicit breakfast (via Greens & Chocolate). 4. Pumpkin Pancakes with Bourbon Maple Syrup: Looking for an excuse to break out the bourbon before noon? Well, make maple syrup (via Love and Confections). 5. Pumpkin Pie […]

When I was in first grade my class had a “Thanksgiving” celebration in class. Someone brought stuffing, someone brought mashed potatoes and someone brought sliced deli turkey breast for sandwiches. My big contribution was cranberry bread, my earliest baking endeavor and my first addition to the Thanksgiving menu in my house. Every year, I made cranberry bread for Thankgiving, until college, when I started experimenting with recipes like Cranberry Orange Bread (not my exact recipe, but very close) and Harvest Pumpkin Apple Bread. Since Thanksgiving is still months away and I had a can of pumpkin puree sitting in my cabinet mocking me, I decided to try a recipe for Pumpkin Cranberry Bars. They turned out perfect – very moist, thanks to a little extra pumpkin that I added. Since I didn’t have any pumpkin pie spice in the house, I experimented with a little extra nutmeg and freshly ground cinnamon to compensate. I also added about 1/3 cup more cranberries than the recipe called for. I figured, it couldn’t hurt.
