Thanksgiving is the best day of year for a lot of reasons, but one in particular: pies for holiday dinners. It’s also the unofficial kick-off to what I will at this time refer to as “pie season.” It’s when pumpkin spice everything gives way to all kinds of holiday goodies that just aren’t everyday desserts. Cookies and brownies? Those are more routine treats that pop up more often at the office, with your afternoon cup of coffee. Pies though, are generally reserved for special occasions. Luckily for pie, special occasion season is upon us. 1. French Apple Pie The filling in this French apple pie is almost like a custard, only with apples added. Think: good. Really, really good. 2.Pumpkin Praline Pie Here’s a pumpkin praline pie that’s traditional…but with a twist. Graham crackers and cornflake crumbs combine together to make a crunchy and delicious crust for a rich and creamy pie. 3. Swedish Cranberry Apple Pie Sweet apple and tart cranberry pie, topped with a crunchy walnut crust. No, happy Thanksgiving to you. 4. Coconut Sweet Potato Pie If you’re not a pumpkin enthusiast, this healthier sweet potato pie is a perfect Thanksgiving alternative to pumpkin pie. 5. Bourbon Apple […]

The best things about the summer are simple. Sunshine, fresh produce from the farmers’ markets, relaxation. There’s no reason why your dessert needs to be complicated. Plus, there’s that whole, “wearing a bathing suit in public places” thing to think about. It’s easy to indulge in the winter when almost all manners of bodily imperfections can be hidden under baggy sweaters and thick winter coats. Things get complicated though when it’s the middle of July, you’re at a backyard cookout and all of a sudden there’s a dessert table staring you in the face. One of the easiest ways to keep yourself from indulging in a party (and I know a thing or two about indulging at par ties) is to bring a dish that you know fits into your healthy lifestyle plan and decide ahead of time to make a good choice. Fresh fruit is always a surefire pick in the summer, especially classics like strawberries and blueberries. Even if you’d rather eat chocolate, there’s nothing not to like about fresh, in-season berries, especially when you top them with a delicious, homemade whipped cream that is almost as easy to make as your morning coffee. It might sound like […]

With the designer cupcake craze finally winding down and Cronuts getting a dirty reputation, the world is ripe for its next dessert phenomenon. Luckily author Lucy Baker is at the ready with 75 recipes for spirited sweets in her cookbook, The Boozy Baker. While the bakers of the world decide what the next big phenomenon in desserts will be, feed those sweet cravings with some delectable desserts that you can whip up at home. Oh and did I mention they all contain booze? That’s right, your new favorite cookbook contains 100 recipes for spirited sweets and cocktails. I had the pleasure of throwing some questions at the author, a girl that has professed such a love of champagne that she says she would put it on her cereal. I think we are in good hands here. IGT: How did you learn how to bake? LB: I have always loved to bake. I have fond memories of preparing boxed cake mixes and slathering them with store-bought chocolate frosting when I was a little girl. I started baking more and more after college, when I moved to New York City. It was a way to relax and unwind after a hectic day. IGT: What inspires […]

One of the most thrilling parts of life is also the scariest. Each day, we wake up not knowing what’s going to happen next. While most people have a fairly good idea if their immediate future includes working nine to five or backpacking through Europe, it seems frequent that the best laid plans have a tendency to fall through. No matter how much you do or don’t plan your life, chances are things won’t turn out the way you expected. Recipes are like that. I have never been a fan of peanut butter but I do like the creamy texture it adds to sandwiches, oatmeal and even baked goods. I love discovering alternatives like cashew butter, sunflower butter and almond butter. Though they run pricier, they’re flavorful, versatile and tend to be high in protein. When choosing a nut butter, the spread with the fewest ingredients possible, like nuts and salt, will have more health benefits and fewer hydrogenated oils and saturated fat. These things are important when you’re eating baked goods. What is it they say about moderation? This is one of those recipes that will seem fancy to whoever you’re serving it to, but in reality, if you can […]

I might not be a dietitian but I do believe in eating healthily. Contrary to the photograph above, which is essentially dripping with chocolate, I think that a healthy diet includes a lot of vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and healthy fat like avocado. Now, I certainly don’t always practice what I preach, as evidenced by the deep chocolate brownies you’re staring at, but I do think that part of being healthy means indulging from time to time. I also think it means cooking at home whenever possible. I think that a salad you make for yourself will taste fresher than something you open from a bag and I think that a brownie you bake yourself will be more satisfying than one that comes vacuum sealed from the grocery store…in moderation, of course. This week, In Good Taste was featured as one of July’s Blogs of the Month on Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution is a national movement to change the way that America eats by helping them cook more at home and eat less processed foods. Oliver’s Food Revolution is about something very important to me: inspiring people to get back to basics and start cooking […]
