These classic chocolate crinkle cookies have a crisp, crackled exterior rolled in powdered sugar and are dense and chewy inside. I find the saying, “the best things in life are free” to be extremely misleading. In my opinion, especially if you ask me this time of year, the best things in life are chocolate. These chocolate crinkle cookies are perfect for a holiday cookie tray, cookie swap, office party or any occasion that could potentially warrant two dozen cookies between now and the end of the year. I realize that these are called “crinkle” cookies because as they bake, they puff up and crinkle, but I can’t say “crinkle” without thinking of the Santa Claus moniker Kris Kringle. So now, these will forever be known to me as Santa Claus cookies but don’t let that stop you from making them long after Christmas. These chocolate crinkle cookies are definitely on the sweeter end of the spectrum, but have a deep rich chocolate flavor that’s going to make you want to reach for more than one. Or, maybe I’m just projecting. To me, these cookies might speak to Kris Kringle, but their powdered sugar exterior make them the perfect winter cookie to enjoy whenever […]

Eggnog lovers can take their holiday spirit to go now with these cookies, made with lots of warm spices, eggnog and finished with buttery, rum-laced icing. I love Christmas. Though I was raised by one Jewish and one Catholic parent, I’ve never identified with either religion and to an extent, have even struggled to fit spirituality into my life. I find the history of religions fascinating and of course, respect those who practice it, but I’ve never identified with the principles of either religion that I was exposed to growing up. Religion is a highly personal topic, and you probably came here for a cookie recipe, so instead of waxing on about what I don’t believe, I want to talk about what I do believe in: tradition, gratitude, love and celebration. I understand the religious significance of Christmas, and I realize a lot of people oppose the commercialization of a day that is supposed to be extremely holy, but I love the ceremony around the season: I think the decorations are beautiful, I love hosting and attending holiday parties, baking and sharing holiday treats and shopping for gifts that will make other people smile. I also love tradition and learning about how my friends and […]

The holiday season might be the most wonderful time of the year but my the second most wonderful time of year is the time of year when cookies, like these Heath Bar Crunch Cookies, is bake sale season. On Saturday, April 28, bloggers across the country will host the Third Annual National Food Blogger Bake Sale. Last year, I organized the sale in Chicago at The Poison Cup, which raised over $1,000 that contributed to a national total of $25,000 through 26 bake sales. This year our national goal is to raise $50,000 for Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale campaign to help alleviate childhood hunger in America. Like last year, we are hosting Chicago’s sale at The Poison Cup and this year, we have a few exciting plans up our sleeve to make this sale the best yet. As always, we need bakers and volunteers for the sale. Chicago friends, if you are interested in contributing some sweet treats or volunteering a few hours of your time to help at the sale, shoot me a note at mariscallahan @ gmail . com (remove spaces). The sale is always a great deal of fun and I don’t want to ruin any surprises here, […]

Blogging about blogging. I know, what could be more boring? Especially when the promise of S’Mores Cookie Bars lies ahead. However, I write about my life and blogging is something that I do in said life, so it makes sense that once in awhile, I’d have some thought to share about this crazy place we call the internet. A few weeks ago at a party I ran into my friend Vanessa and we found ourselves talking about our blogs (shocking, right?). One of the topics we touched upon was whether it’s okay to use photography or recipes from another – clearly monetized – blog without asking permission. Vanessa is on Team Ask Permission Before Using Someone Else’s Work, which I totally agree with, but if someone is monetizing their blog with advertisements and sponsored blog posts, I can’t help but wonder what it is that makes that blog any different than, say, the Food Network or Martha Stewart? Let’s be honest. People rip off recipes and/or photography from mainstream commercial sites all the time, even some of the “biggest” and “most popular” blogs on the internet. Does that make it right? No. But it happens all the time. I’ve seen […]

It’s Friday. You should have a treat. You should, but I shouldn’t. I have had plenty of treats over the past couple of weeks…or months. Semantics. So, with a package of sugar cookie dough then went unused over the holidays — but has not yet expired — and a jar of raspberry preserves that I bought back in June intending to make pop-tarts but never got around to it — also not yet expired — I made these gems. This recipe is really a riff on one from an ages-old episode of ‘Giada at Home.’ Then again, I saw the episode so long ago that I very well could have completely manipulated it in my mind so it looks no longer remotely resembles anything Giada has ever made. In any event, what I think I saw Giada do was bake a roll of sugar cookie dough on a cookie sheet and top it with preserves and hazelnuts and it looked seven thousand kinds of delicious. I did something similar. And now, you should too.
