I’m a purist when it comes to chocolate and this principle applies especially to brownies. Some people like peanut butter, nuts or marbled cheesecake swirls in their brownies. I like chocolate, straight up, with a side of chocolate. Being my grandmother’s favorite brownie recipe, the card this recipe was written on has yellowed with age and is so faded you can barely read the loopy cursive handwriting, but it’s still clear: these are brownies with no nuts, no frills. If you’re worried that they’ll be too boring for your unbiased brownie palate, let me convince you that with two cups of sugar and a half pound of butter (which is also two sticks of butter but when you say ‘half pound,’ it sounds like so much more), there is no lack of flavor or decadence in this recipe. The brownies are so indulgent that they’re squarely a “once in awhile” recipe. You really can’t make them too often…because then, you’ll eat them too often and no, I don’t know that solely from experience, why do you ask?

I have a mild obsession with scones. Though not nearly as crave-able as cookies and admittedly easier to step away from than cake, scones are a much under sung baked good. If you like the occasional sweet treat – one that you can eat morning, noon, or night, then you’ll want to focus here. They’re even a hit when you over bake them a little bit. Ahem. Scones are traditional cooked pastries that are simple and easy to make, and delicious to eat. Cherry and lime are a fun combination because cherries are so reminiscent of summer, especially in the Midwest where Michigan cherries are just a stone’s throw away. Limes are one of those things that most people have in their fridge, even people who rarely turn their ovens on because hello, Corona. If your experience with scones is limited to the ones that you press your face up to the bakery case at Starbucks to drool over before the barista quietly asks you to leave, you’ll love how simple this recipe is to make and how impressed people will look when you say you’ve made scones.

It’s Friday. You should have a treat. You should, but I shouldn’t. I have had plenty of treats over the past couple of weeks…or months. Semantics. So, with a package of sugar cookie dough then went unused over the holidays — but has not yet expired — and a jar of raspberry preserves that I bought back in June intending to make pop-tarts but never got around to it — also not yet expired — I made these gems. This recipe is really a riff on one from an ages-old episode of ‘Giada at Home.’ Then again, I saw the episode so long ago that I very well could have completely manipulated it in my mind so it looks no longer remotely resembles anything Giada has ever made. In any event, what I think I saw Giada do was bake a roll of sugar cookie dough on a cookie sheet and top it with preserves and hazelnuts and it looked seven thousand kinds of delicious. I did something similar. And now, you should too.

I love bread. I love rolls, I love baguettes and I love biscuits. What I don’t love are those little pillow-ey dinner rolls that you get at the grocery store, that so many people buy for Thanksgiving out of convenience. I am all for convenience. Huge fan of convenience. But since you’re reading my blog, you’re getting my opinion and my opinion is: don’t waste your calories, money or precious holiday dinner table real estate on store bought rolls. Instead, bake a fresh batch of biscuits and if you’re feeling really adventurous, add chives and cubed brie to the batter before you cut the dough for baking. I spotted this idea on Real Simple, so I took my favorite biscuit recipe and added cubed brie and about two heaping tablespoons of chives. These were great but unlike many rolls, that you can make in advance and keep in an airtight container until the big day, you should probably bake these off the morning that you plan to eat them. Or better yet, prepare them, pop them in the refrigerator on a baking sheet wrapped tightly in plastic and bake them off while you’re slicing the turkey. Save Print Brie & […]

I know what you’re thinking. Enough with the pumpkin, lady. While I can’t make any promises, I can assure you that I am running low on canned pumpkin with no pending plans to purchase more after these pumpkin apple harvest muffins. I also realized, recently, that even though I have recipes here for banana muffins with tart lemon icing and whole wheat blueberry muffins, if you come here for a muffin recipe but you don’t like bananas or berries, well, you’re out of luck. The solution? Pumpkin-Apple Muffins. Of course, since I can’t leave a perfectly delicious recipe well enough alone, I adulterated them with golden raisins and walnuts. I’m glad I did. Consider this an obsession, consider it my last pumpkin hurrah, whatever. Fall is dwindling and I’m holding on to every last bit of it.
