I know, I know. I’m sharing a cookie recipe after Christmas, right when the Internet is breathing a collective sigh of relief that cookie season is finally behind us and that it’s time to return to our regularly scheduled diets. I won’t lie, I have a yoga class scheduled this afternoon and I’m listening to non-Christmas music for the first time since Thanksgiving, so I appreciate the break. At the same time, I’m all for anything that will extend the festive Christmas spirit for a few more days and these ginger molasses cookies happen to fit the bill. There are so many things about the Christmas season that I wish were simply winter traditions. I’m all about the magic of Christmas and I realize it bears some pretty significant religious symbolism for a lot of people, but for me it’s about celebrating the people, places and experiences that you’re grateful for and celebrating the year. I love the music, the decorations, the excuse to bake (a lot) and eat (a lot) with loved ones. Even though the Christmas season is rooted in religion, there is a lot about the Christmas season that has brings out the good in people and I think that’s something to […]

Eggnog: you love it or hate it. Around this time of year, it’s hard to step foot in a restaurant, bar or friend’s house without someone offering you a holiday spirited cocktail. From spiked apple cider to a classic Tom & Jerry to cranberry martinis, holiday cheer is plentiful in December, in more ways than one. I am a bit of an anomaly — I love eggnog, but generally find it too thick and cloying to drink more than a few sips, so making it from scratch is more effort than it’s worth. Brad isn’t much of a mixed drink guy — he drinks beer, wine and the most festive cocktail you’ll see him sipping is gin and tonic. Yet, every year in December I find myself drawn to fill my shopping cart with eggnog and use it in some of my favorite holiday recipes. Last year I made Iced Eggnog Cookies that were hugely popular in my office and this year, Chila ‘Orchata Cinnamon Cream Rum has been a game changer in my kitchen. Chila ‘Orchata mixes the richness of Puerto Rican rum, spice of cinnamon horchata and sweetness of Tahitian vanilla for a delicious result. Just the right […]

Recently, when looking for a jambalaya recipe for inspiration, I came across a new to me blog called The Foodie Physician. It’s written by Dr. Sonali Ruder, a board certified Emergency Medicine physician and culinary school graduate. As I browsed her recipes I realized that some of the most interesting blogs that I read are those that were born out of passion rather than started as a business. While for many, blogging has evolved from hobby to source of income, 100% of the blogs that I read regularly have either been around for close to ten years now — before anyone had grasped monetization — or were started by someone looking for a creative outlet to complement our busy careers. These days, running ads and writing sponsored content are par the course, but my favorite blogs are penned by people with diverse interests, well-rounded lives, and even different dietary preferences than my own, because it allows me to constantly learn new things about food and cooking. And of course, find new favorite recipes. My job in PR allows me a lot of creativity and the company I work for is as innovative as they come, but back when I started my blog I […]

If you love to bake, there is nothing more exciting than trying a brand new appliance or ingredient that you’ve never before used in the kitchen. We recently discovered Norm’s Farms, a family-owned business based in North Carolina that happens to be at the forefront of one of the most sustainable and exciting new crops: Elderberry. Their products, which include plants, jellies, jams, preserves, extracts and syrups packed with with Vitamins A, B and C , iron, potassium, are made here in the United States. Founded by Ann, Rodger, and Erin Lenhardt, the Norm’s Farms family believes in the sustainable production of healing foods made with natural, simple ingredients–just like the elderberries that they grow. Because the Norm’s Farms family recognizes that their small Missouri farm cannot keep up with the company’s demand, they have begun working with small family farmers in North Carolina to help establish elderberry orchards. Norm’s Farms will have a local source of elderberries for their products in addition to those grown in Missouri. Growing up, I had a major sweet tooth that was especially loyal to anything chocolate. I had very little use for fruit based desserts, vanilla ice cream or any candy that wasn’t somehow […]

People like cake. Now, I’m more of a cookie-and-brownie person myself, but even I understand that there’s a reason why we have birthday cake and not birthday brownies or birthday pie. People like cake. There are all kinds of cakes out there – celebration cakes, breakfast cakes – and my personal favorite, ice cream cake – but the best cakes out there are the everyday cakes. Cakes that isn’t too drenched in too-sweet frosting so you can snack on it between meals, cake that you can offer someone for no reason at all. I adapted this from an Ina Garten recipe for blueberry crumb cake, simply because I wanted to make the perfect crumb cake without making a trip to the store for ingredients. I had everything on the list for Ina’s cake except the blueberries, so a blueberry-less cake it would be.
