I love chocolate and I love candy canes, so I knew when I saw a recipe for Chocolate Chip Candy Cane Cookies on the Food Network, that I would need to make them. I made these cookies on Wednesday night, and since Brad was working late I invited my neighbor over to hang out and have a glass of wine while I baked. As most bloggers can probably relate around the holiday season, I was so excited to pull these out of the oven and see that some of them had even turned out round, and even more excited when they tasted perfectly chocolatey and perfectly pepperminty. My excitement waned when I realized that in order to share them here on my blog I would have to take photos of them. I love to cook and bake, learn about food and wine, mix festive cocktails and explore new cuisines and cooking styles when dining out. I adore writing and since I was in fifth grade and used to try to write “novels” on my dad’s enormous Compaq desktop computer, have enjoyed the creative outlet. What I don’t enjoy is photography because I’m just not good at it. I have a Canon […]

Snickerdoodle Blondie Bars are moist, dense and have a little added kick from a ginger cinnamon sugar topping. Perfect for rounding out a holiday cookie platter or packing up as a holiday hostess gift. I know, I know. This time of year there are sweets and cocktails everywhere and you’re actually sick of desserts and you’re tired of drinking and you just really want to eat a salad. Well, to that I say: TOO. BAD. Not only did I make cinnamon snickerdoodle blondie bars, but I am co-hosting an amazing event on Tuesday, December 13th, so put on your party pants and get ready to sip cocktails, decorate cookies and take home some delicious artisan chocolate. I am teaming up with a few of my blogging friends to host a cookie decorating party to raise money for Youth Outreach Services, an organization in Chicago uniquely dedicated to providing prevention services, child welfare, juvenile justice support and mental and behavioral health counseling to at-risk teenagers, all with the intention of helping these young adults reach a brighter future. Here’s the scoop on how you can join us too: Freehand Chicago 19 E Ohio St, Chicago, IL 60611 United States What better way to get in the […]

Eggnog lovers can take their holiday spirit to go now with these cookies, made with lots of warm spices, eggnog and finished with buttery, rum-laced icing. I love Christmas. Though I was raised by one Jewish and one Catholic parent, I’ve never identified with either religion and to an extent, have even struggled to fit spirituality into my life. I find the history of religions fascinating and of course, respect those who practice it, but I’ve never identified with the principles of either religion that I was exposed to growing up. Religion is a highly personal topic, and you probably came here for a cookie recipe, so instead of waxing on about what I don’t believe, I want to talk about what I do believe in: tradition, gratitude, love and celebration. I understand the religious significance of Christmas, and I realize a lot of people oppose the commercialization of a day that is supposed to be extremely holy, but I love the ceremony around the season: I think the decorations are beautiful, I love hosting and attending holiday parties, baking and sharing holiday treats and shopping for gifts that will make other people smile. I also love tradition and learning about how my friends and […]

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #SpookySnacks #CollectiveBias Forget Christmas, for some people, Halloween is the most wonderful time of the year. Candy, costumes and parties punctuate a month when really, nothing else terribly exciting is happening. Sure, there are apples to eat and pumpkin pies to bake, but without Halloween, part of the festive spirit of Fall wouldn’t exist. And also, I would have one less excuse to make cupcakes. One of the most fun things about having friends with children is that you get to do all kinds of fun stuff that you wouldn’t ordinarily have an excuse to do, like play with legos and hang out on a hot summer afternoon in a blow-up kiddie pool. Not that I’ve done those things. You also get an excuse to make super fun, creative treats that you might never otherwise make on your own, like these Halloween cupcakes made with only three ingredients, including Fanta Orange soda and OREO cookies. Growing up, my brother always liked flavored sodas like orange and rootbeer, which my parents would occasionally buy as a treat. The 8-ounce mini cans pictured here are perfect for kids who […]

The holiday season might be the most wonderful time of the year but my the second most wonderful time of year is the time of year when cookies, like these Heath Bar Crunch Cookies, is bake sale season. On Saturday, April 28, bloggers across the country will host the Third Annual National Food Blogger Bake Sale. Last year, I organized the sale in Chicago at The Poison Cup, which raised over $1,000 that contributed to a national total of $25,000 through 26 bake sales. This year our national goal is to raise $50,000 for Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale campaign to help alleviate childhood hunger in America. Like last year, we are hosting Chicago’s sale at The Poison Cup and this year, we have a few exciting plans up our sleeve to make this sale the best yet. As always, we need bakers and volunteers for the sale. Chicago friends, if you are interested in contributing some sweet treats or volunteering a few hours of your time to help at the sale, shoot me a note at mariscallahan @ gmail . com (remove spaces). The sale is always a great deal of fun and I don’t want to ruin any surprises here, […]
