Spiked strawberry rosé lemonade is a refreshing cocktail to accompany brunch, patio parties or as a casual dinner party apertíf all summer long. Rosé season has been in full swing for a few months now and I make no secret of the fact that the much-beloved “summer water” is not my beverage of choice during the months of June, July and August. Although there are plenty of rosé wines to drink during patio season, I’ve always preferred Sauvignon Blanc or an occasional Oregon Pinot Gris. That is, until I discovered rosé lemonade. Spiked rosé lemonade, to be more specific. In Chicago we have a lovely chain of local markets called Foxtrot Delivery Market. Think: your cutest local organic grocery + coffee bar + gift shop tied nicely together with an app that allows you to order anything for delivery in an hour or less. Now, there are a lot of delivery apps that claim one hour or less service, but they often lie. Foxtrot is pretty punctual and perfect for entertaining needs that extend beyond your local Aldi or Trader Joe’s (we live above an Aldi but there are certain things you just won’t find there and gourmet cheese and artisan […]

Last Christmas, my friend Anita introduced me to Bailey’s Original Irish Cream. I’d never tried it before because I’m not one for sweet or sugary cocktails, I’ll take a glass of dry red wine over a frilly martini any day. Even so, around the holidays, we’re all a little uninhibited when it comes to trying new things and I obliged her a cocktail that she had made with vanilla vodka, Bailey’s Original Irish Cream and ice cubes made from freshly brewed coffee. After all, spending the holidays with friends means exposure to new family traditions and who am I not to participate in Christmas spirit? (That is, I am talking about actual Christmas spirits here) So, I did the polite thing to do, I tried it and well, holy hell. I love coffee and this super creamy, spiked java concoction was so delicious it put my daily morning cup to shame. Granted, there are a lot of good reasons why I shouldn’t replace my morning cup of coffee with a splash of 2% milk for this sinfully creamy cocktail version of coffee, but it wouldn’t be fun to dwell on that fact before we talk about your new favorite holiday beverage.

The Moscow Mule is a refreshing vodka-based cocktail with spicy ginger beer and fresh lime juice. This recipe is quick, easy, classic, and can be customized by adding your favorite muddled fruit. As much as I enjoy going out for cocktails with friends or having a little happy hour at home with Brad, I’m quite picky when it comes to cocktails. I don’t like drinks that are full of sugar and even craft cocktails made with simple ingredients tend to be too sweet for me. The only exception for me, is the Moscow Mule. Made with spicy ginger beer and fresh, tart lemon juice, the drink is fizzy and tangy, with a hint of sweetness and spice. Served in an iconic copper mug, your beverage stays cold, so you don’t feel like you have to drink it fast before it gets too watered down. The best part about making one at home is that it only has four ingredients and doesn’t require a shaker or blender: just pour, stir, sip and enjoy! A Tres Leches Martini made with Chila ‘Orchata Cinnamon Cream Rum is the perfect beverage to sip while wishing you were vacationing on a Caribbean island or while you’re spending an afternoon with your girlfriends on a patio. Though the trees are finally sprouting a few buds and we’ve had a few glimmers of sunshine here and there, Chicago isn’t exactly known for it’s warm, lush, spring weather. The expression “April showers bring May flowers” was probably coined here. Luckily, Chicago has a way of making you fall in love all over again, just when you’re about to hop on the next plane south and call it quits. This past weekend we had two beautiful, glorious, wonderful days of sunshine. I wish I could have captured that little slice of spring in a bottle, but being a realistic adult, I know that isn’t actually possible. The next best way to cure a case of the grey sky blues? Shaking up a batch of cocktails […]

A blend of muddled blackberries, lime, vodka, and ginger beer create the perfect Blackberry Ginger Moscow Mule, a refreshing springtime cocktail. When I’m out with friends or entertaining at home, wine is generally my beverage of choice. Light reds like Pinot Noir, a dry, crisp Sauvignon Blanc in the summer or of course, anything sparkling, the bubblier the better. Though martinis and mixed drinks are a fun departure from wine, they’re generally full of sugar and calories that make your teeth and head hurt. Entertaining at home, though? That’s a different story. That’s when you can pick the ingredients you like, in the quantities you like, and mix them with the spirits that you like. For me, that means spicy ginger, tart fruit and zesty citrus for Moscow Mules. These Blackberry Moscow Mules are a great way to usher in spring with something refreshing to sip…without the accompanying sugar hangover. g The first time I had a Moscow Mule, I was visiting friends outside of Columbus, Ohio. We went to The Pearl, a restaurant and oyster bar known for its Moscow Mules. Usually served in cold copper mugs, the Moscow Mule is made with three simple ingredients: ginger beer, available at most grocery and […]
