These classic chocolate crinkle cookies have a crisp, crackled exterior rolled in powdered sugar and are dense and chewy inside. I find the saying, “the best things in life are free” to be extremely misleading. In my opinion, especially if you ask me this time of year, the best things in life are chocolate. These chocolate crinkle cookies are perfect for a holiday cookie tray, cookie swap, office party or any occasion that could potentially warrant two dozen cookies between now and the end of the year. I realize that these are called “crinkle” cookies because as they bake, they puff up and crinkle, but I can’t say “crinkle” without thinking of the Santa Claus moniker Kris Kringle. So now, these will forever be known to me as Santa Claus cookies but don’t let that stop you from making them long after Christmas. These chocolate crinkle cookies are definitely on the sweeter end of the spectrum, but have a deep rich chocolate flavor that’s going to make you want to reach for more than one. Or, maybe I’m just projecting. To me, these cookies might speak to Kris Kringle, but their powdered sugar exterior make them the perfect winter cookie to enjoy whenever […]

Remember when I revealed my big confession, that I don’t love peanut butter? Well, now I will let you in on my second confession. That even extends to deliciousness in the form of double chocolate chip peanut butter squares. When I need to bake for a party or another occasion and I don’t want to find myself eating an entire batch of said baked goods, I bring in my secret weapon: peanut butter. If I don’t like it, I won’t eat it, right? Some might find that mildly disordered, but I prefer to call it strategic. While frozen desserts tend to have a reputation for warmer-weather enjoyment, it’s was about three degrees in Chicago today so you could actually make these peanut butter squares and eat them outside without a mess. I like to look on the bright side of things. A few years ago I went through a period wherein I wanted to make everything from scratch. One might even say I was mildly compulsive about baking homemade bread, using fresh herbs versus dried and whipping fresh cream for dessert. One time I actually went to the bar with homemade monkey bread in my purse in case one of […]

After reading the comments from my last post about my bad Karma, I was genuinely touched by the kind words that many of you had to say about my rotten luck during the month of August. Two weeks ago, to beat the sweltering August heat, I ducked into a theater near Union Square and saw the much talked-about foodie blogger flick, Julie & Julia. I considered writing a response to the movie here but since some other bloggers wrote them so eloquently I didn’t see the need to recap what many of you probably saw in the theaters. However, throughout the movie, I found myself thrilled with Julia. Meryl Streep captured the essence of a person who was full of fire and not only did I enjoy the acting, the antics, but I was fascinated by this person who devoted her life doing what she loved to do: cook. And not only did she cook, she wanted to make it easy for others to as well. I started wondering if my own generation has a Julia. Knowing full well that hers are large shoes to fill (literally and figuratively) it’s difficult to think of a modern culinary icon to compare with Julia. While we might not have […]
