All opinions are mine alone. #VivaLaMorena #CollectiveBias Gooey Cheddar and La Morena Jalapeño Peppers add a kick of seriously spicy, savory flavor to these Spicy Jalapeño-Cheddar Scones. While a lot of people are menu-planning, stocking their kitchens with canned pumpkin and getting ready to host the holidays for the first time, many others are thinking about how to mix things up this year to avoid the fatigue that accompanies serving the same exact dishes year after year. In my family, there are some food traditions around the holidays that we just can’t change. At Thanksgiving, my mother will only have sweet potatoes topped with marshmallows and about a pound of sugar and my brother has to finish the meal with pecan pie. We always celebrate Christmas Eve with small plates and snacks instead of a large meal, with only the menu changing annually. To accommodate tradition, but also fulfill my urge to try new recipes and experiment with different flavors and cuisines, I try to add something new each year to a holiday meal instead of replacing a longtime favorite, which, I should add, never goes over well. This way, instead of […]

‘Tis the season where everyone loses their mind over the pumpkin spice latte, but there’s more where that came from — and we’re not just talking about pumpkin pie. There are plenty of uses for the bright orange vegetable and they’re popping up everywhere from festive appetizers to delicious desserts. Read on for some of the best ways to cook and bake with pumpkin for every occasion. 1. Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Marble Cake: This simple egg-free cake is the perfect way to celebrate your love for pumpkin and chocolate, with ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry (via Nerdy Mama). 2. Lightened-Up Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins: Pumpkin, chocolate and only 144 calories. That is, if you can manage not to eat all of them (via Quarter Life (Crisis) Cuisine). 3. Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Oat Bars: Pumpkin and chocolate chip might sound decadent, but it can be healthy, too. Just add oats for these tasty bars that work for dessert, a snack or, in my book, an illicit breakfast (via Greens & Chocolate). 4. Pumpkin Pancakes with Bourbon Maple Syrup: Looking for an excuse to break out the bourbon before noon? Well, make maple syrup (via Love and Confections). 5. Pumpkin Pie […]

Pumpkin Pie is easily one of the most iconic desserts served at Thanksgiving dinner tables. Though we’re big fans of our pumpkin cheesecake with gingersnap crust, pumpkin pie happens to be one of the easiest desserts you can ever make. Ever. When we see recipes for “One Bowl Pumpkin Pie” we have to laugh. Most pumpkin pies require little more than one bowl and a spoon or spatula to mix all of your ingredients together. What goes in the bowl? That’s where you can get creative. We substituted half of the heavy cream or milk that typically goes into a pumpkin pie with International Delight Pumpkin Spice Creamer. We can’t get enough of the flavor this season and it adds the perfect hint of warm fall spices to the already earthy sweetness of pumpkin pie. Save Print Prep time: 10 mins Cook time: 60 mins Total time: 1 hour 10 mins Serves: 6-8 Ingredients ¾ cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground ginger ¼ teaspoon ground cloves 2 large eggs 1 can (15 oz.) pumpkin puree (not to be mistaken with pumpkin pie filling) 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk ½ cup International […]

I’ve written 515 posts here (admittedly, some of them are probably drafts that never made it to the big leagues). I won’t tell you how many visitors I’ve had here since Day 1, partially because my friend Lydia said that sharing your blog traffic on your blog is like telling everyone your bathing suit size. Since I started my blog almost three and a half years ago, it’s changed a lot. When I was twenty-four I started writing here because I liked to write, but looking back, it was really a way to fill my boring evenings. When I was living in New York, I didn’t have much of a social life, at my own doing. Point in case: two months before I started my blog, a college friend had invited me to a St. Patrick’s Day Party in Hoboken and I declined. I wanted to stay home and make a turkey meat loaf recipe I had seen in Real Simple. Who wouldn’t want to party with me? Initially I was awed with how many people I was meeting through blogging. I went to the Martha Stewart Blogger Show, where I met Matt Armendariz from Matt Bites and Deb Perelman […]

I think there is a difference between people who like food and people who like to eat. My non-scientific, subjective definition is that someone who likes food cares about the ingredients they use, where the things they eat come from and how to prepare the ingredients with flavors that will enhance or complement their taste. Alternatively, people who like to eat care less about what they’re eating than the fact that they’re eating. Greasy French fries? Bring it. Sub-par diner lasagna? They’ll have seconds. Sometimes, the people who like to eat also like food, but not always. I’ve always liked to eat. And while I’ve never been a Dorito-chomping fast-food shoveler, I’ve always been an eater. Yet, over the past few years, I’ve taken a more invested interest in food, cooking and the ingredients that I use. Some might use the term food snob but that just sounds so…well, snobby. Before I started this blog, I thought a lemon was a lemon. I knew that there were hundreds of varieties of apples and more types of squash than there are days of the week but it wasn’t until I entered food blogdom did I learn what a Meyer lemon is. […]
