All opinions are mine alone. #VivaLaMorena #CollectiveBias Gooey Cheddar and La Morena Jalapeño Peppers add a kick of seriously spicy, savory flavor to these Spicy Jalapeño-Cheddar Scones. While a lot of people are menu-planning, stocking their kitchens with canned pumpkin and getting ready to host the holidays for the first time, many others are thinking about how to mix things up this year to avoid the fatigue that accompanies serving the same exact dishes year after year. In my family, there are some food traditions around the holidays that we just can’t change. At Thanksgiving, my mother will only have sweet potatoes topped with marshmallows and about a pound of sugar and my brother has to finish the meal with pecan pie. We always celebrate Christmas Eve with small plates and snacks instead of a large meal, with only the menu changing annually. To accommodate tradition, but also fulfill my urge to try new recipes and experiment with different flavors and cuisines, I try to add something new each year to a holiday meal instead of replacing a longtime favorite, which, I should add, never goes over well. This way, instead of […]

There is one fruit that is always in my refrigerator no matter what: blueberries. I buy them in bulk whenever they’re on sale at the grocery store and love mixing them in yogurt or oatmeal, or even popping them individually as a snack throughout the day. As it happens though, I have an extraordinary tendency to take even the healthiest of fruit snacks and turn them into a fattening baked good. In the case of this blueberry lemon walnut cake, delicious fresh blueberries need little more than lemons and walnuts to turn a simple baked good into a stellar one. The tartness of lemons complements the sweet subtle taste of walnuts in this quick bread recipe. The blueberries lend a colorful antioxidant boost, plus other nutrients like dietary fiber and Vitamin C.

These double chocolate brownies are studded with butterscotch and chocolate chips with the rich taste of cocoa and vanilla. I’ve always liked the word serendipity, from visiting to New York’s famous frozen hot chocolate purveyor as a child to the John Cusack movie that earned my viewership a number of times during a brief lovelorn period my senior year of college. This past weekend I experienced serendipity firsthand when I was deleting the bulk of the online newsletters and junk mail clogging my inbox and came across a simple chocolate brownie recipe from Real Simple. Since the holidays my cabinets have been cluttered with baking supplies that I purchased but never got around to using – brown sugar, powdered sugar, two five-pound bags of bread flour and as luck would have it, a bag of butterscotch chips. As much as I love simple chocolate brownies, there are times when my sweet tooth overtakes the rational side of my mind and I take a perfectly good baked good and make it even sweeter. I’ve never liked February very much. When I was in eleventh grade the boy I had been dating old me that he didn’t like me anymore on February 6th. […]

When life hands you strawberries that are a little bit past their prime…make berry muffins! In addition to my oven that doesn’t open, I have a refrigerator that’s just a little too small. It’s a standard, apartment-sized appliance but it’s also deeper than it is wide and just in general, difficult to store things. I often have to pile stuff on top of each other or stick smaller items behind large, unwieldy tupperware containers and the like. As a result, important things like strawberries get caught behind loaves of bread and stacks of yogurts. Recently, I was rummaging through my misshapen fridge and I found a container of strawberries, just past ripe, perfect candidates to mash with a fork and fold into a perfect muffin batter. I had some extra blueberries on hand from the whole-wheat blueberry muffins I baked recently and what could be a better marriage than juicy blueberries and sweet strawberries? Only a muffin bursting with both.

I’m still recovering from yesterday’s food blogger bake sale in Chicago. It was a great day that started with a 6:15 AM segment on NBC 5 about the Chicago Food Blogger Bake Sale and ended after hours of brownies, cookies, cupcakes and of course: $885.00 raised for Share Our Strength to help fight childhood hunger in the US. Even though I used last night (and okay, most of this morning…and part of the afternoon) to catch up on the sleep I opted to forgo in lieu of baking for the past few nights, I’m still not entirely confident in my ability to form a logical, coherent thoughts. So, here are some photos from the bake sale, (all courtesy of Allie Osmar) that sum up the afternoon nicely. The location, Smash Cake Bakery was perfect, half-dozen hardworking volunteers lent support on-site and more than fifteen bakers helped make the day a success. It was also so much fun! I’ve said it before, but thank you to all of the volunteers. I’ve never been a part of an event that so many people participated in because they wanted to and not because it was required. The day reminded me how much I […]
