Where to Find the Best Cupcakes in New York City

To Eat, Travel

Since today we all “sprang ahead” and lost an hour in the day, I somehow found myself short on time.

It seems that the hour I lost is the hour I would have gone to the gym, done my laundry, cooked dinner and written this post.

Please enjoy this photo journal of my weekend slash cop-out post brought to you by daylight savings time.

On Saturday Jessica visited the city and we used her visit as an excuse to take a self-guided eating tour de Manhattan, which as any should, began with cupcakes.

Magnolia Bakery

My favorite part of Magnolia, aside from the pound of confectioner’s sugar frosting that they heap onto each perfect cupcake, is the decor – old-fashioned and “shabby chic” with frilly, feminine curtains and artisan cakestands and platters displayed in the windows.

Amid mile-high red velvet cakes, bakery racks full of cheesecake bars and chocolate tortes, jars full of freshly-baked cookies, it was clear from the line out the door and the small storefront full to capacity that the crowd comes for the cupcakes.

They were almost too pretty to eat. But we managed.

Eleni’s

After Magnolia, we stopped by Eleni’s in Chelsea Market, where I was able to snap these two pictures before we were reprimanded by the lovely, well-mannered clerk at the bakery.

Billy’s Bakery

Upon leaving Chelsea Market, we stumbled uponΒ Billy’s Bakery, a 1940’s-esque bakery where I was less impressed by the cupcakes than I was by their monster sized pies and confections.

Luckily, we did a lot of walking.

If you’re in New York, what are your favorite bakeries? If you’re not in New York, which ones are you dying to try?

Those cupcakes look so good! We should try to do a NYC blogger cupcake crawl when the weather gets nicer.

mmmh i like magnolia very very much. i hate the tourists lining up there though. thank you sex and the city.
but i think i like buttercup even more, they have glorious cupcakes and great cakes. (my husband and i often take a slice of hummingbird cake home for dessert after eating at zarela’s.)
magnolia co-owners (and ‘founders’) jennifer appel and allysa torey parted ways in 2000 and torey opened buttercup shortly after.

I used to like Crumbs but for some reason I’m not a fan anymore. There is a great little place that has the same kind as Buttercup and Magnolia, maybe a little fresher, on Rivington near Old Suffolk and Essex. They’re only $1.50! Maybe the cheapest ones in town!

Buttercup Bakery. I think they have one on the Upper West and one more downtown, but oh man they are good. Similar to Magnolia. And also Crumbs! Oh Crumbs are sooo good. And huge! πŸ™‚
So glad to see you Saturday night, sorry we didn’t get to see you at brunch.

I have never been to Magnolia, but I do have a cupcake weakness. If you are ever in Portland, we’ll have to go to a couple places see how they compare! πŸ™‚

We really enjoyed the cupcakes we got from Crumbs. We got the mini-sampler so we could taste a lot more!

Levain’s on the UWS has THE BEST (and I mean the best) chocolate chip cookies ever made. They’re pricey but worth it once in a while. Also, Sweet Revenge is amazing in the West Village (Bedford and Carmine)… cupcakes are amazing and any place that offers a wine or beer pairing to a cupcake gets 5 stars in my book.
